    Dear All,

My garage is way too small for my boat and I am thinking of some way to store it under cover. I realized that on one side of the house, there is some land which I could possibly park the boat. Would just reverse the trailer up the curb to get the boat in. I am thinking of a few options :

    1. Re route my fencing such that it comes along one side of it, and install a gate at the front

    2. Rent or buy some kind of shed that I could place next to my house

My main aim is to ensure storage at my home. Secondly, to provide some cover. Finally also for security. I guess chain link fence is an option, but if I could keep it covered, it would be great.

I have included a picture with the black line drawn to indicate the potential spot. The maximum area I have without taking my neighbour’s land is 9’3″ wide from the side of the house. And the length of the shed is about 23′. The minimum space within the shed is 8’9″ wide (doorway too), 22’6″, and if there is a roof, at least 9′ so that I will not keep bumping my head when I am standing on the boat.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas or knows who I should be talking to about the above options? Thanks!!

PS/ Finally, how about laying some hard floor or concrete on that spot? Is that gonna be expensive too? Total concrete area is 46′ x 9’3”. This is to facilitate me in using a hand pushed trailer dolly to move the trailer out or into the shed if someone else parked on the kerb right in front of the shed.

First thing that you will need to do is if you decide on building a shed is to find out from your City Planning and Zoning Department is how far does the shed have to be from your lot line. I am going to be building a second garage this year and any structure I build has to be 5′ from my side lot line and 8′ from my back lot line.

To lay concrete over that spot would take 3 yards. Currently concrete is just under $100/yd3. But 3 yds may be subject to a small load fee. A contractor would get over $1300 to do it so it would be worth your time to find someone who does it on the side like Mike Watson or myself. That could save you a quick 500.

Definitely pour a concrete slab for a floor. I guess it all depends on what you want to do. You could build a shed and attach it to the house, or you could buy one of those cheaper car ports and put it over the concrete slab. There are quite a few ways to store the boat and keep it fairly reasonable as well

My thoughts too, but look how close his neighbors garage is to the lot line. Steve’s right either way you’re going to have to check with the city first.

You definately should check with the city first before you do anything. You may not be allowed to put a shed or even a car port in your side/front yard. If you put up a shed a boat could fit in, it may have enough square footage to be considered a garage. I’d check with the neighbor too before I put anything up.

How can I get them? Are the good for winter too? Another option is to carport my driveway.

Even if you get a variance, you’l never fit a boat of any size in there. No city of any size will allow for a port there either. Ports just aid in theft anyway…they protect thieves from all views. I’d just get a permit for a slab and put the boat out in the open. Bring your valuables in every time your get back and be sure to get a GOOD lock for the outboard.
