Brett Favre to Return in 2006

ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has told the Packers he will return for the 2006 season. I look forward to one more three-INT performance from # 4 in the Metrodome, as Favre continues to play “gunslinger” behind a third-rate offensive line. On the downside, this means one more year of shameless slurping from the media and announcers–if the Packers play on NBC at all this season, and John Madden is in the booth, remind me to watch something else.

The Packer organization would have been better off thanking him for everything he had done for them and moved on after the end of last season. Too much of the planning for this season and the future was hinged on weather of not Brett was coming back this year. They lost another long time member of their O line, their kicker, Jevon Walker says he will retire before he’ll ever put that uniform back on and has his house in GB up for sale, the team didn’t/couldn’t do much in FA since they didn’t know how much of their $$ was available because of Brett……..

I’m not trying to bash the Pack here, but that organization has some rough road ahead of itself. I question if Thompson is the best man for that job.

You’re right, I think the Vikings quarterback for this year looks great. I don’t think that our offense was the main problem last year. They still put up about 21 points a game. It was our defense that sucked and they have done quite a bit to replace some of the problems there and will probably get someone like Hawk in the draft that will make even more of an impact. I don’t know what they should do about the Walker thing though. I almost say let him rot on the roster. We will never get anything of his value in return and he wins that way and sets a precedent for the future. Last I heard the Packers were looking to get a second round pick for him. That isn’t enough for a pro bowl receiver. I hope they tell him to shove it and just let him sit out the year and waste another year of playing in his prime.

Being a diehard Vikings fan all my life, it’s hard for me to admit that Favre was one of the best in the game. He is a Hall of Famer…no question. When he wasn’t playing the Vikes, he was fun to watch. But his time has come to call it quits and start playing golf full time or doing Monday Night Football with John Randall and Chewy!!

Seriously though…why does he want to go out like Joe Montana or Jerry Rice?

I too am a Vikings Fan and have enjoyed/hated watching Brett Favre plan the game. He is a true Ironman and I think he truely LOVES the game and does NOT want to stop playing just because he “had a bad year”. I wish him the best and look forward to watching him prove us wrong. 690reece

The best thing the rest of the NFC North , other than the Packers , have going for it is Ted Thompson, you guys should love him! Ron Wolf he is NOT. He should have things so messed up by the time he’s done , enjoy it Viking ,Bear ,and Lion Fan… we’ll be back ,this wont last forever . I thought it was interesting how Brett said that the Packers needed to inprove them team (aquire more talent around him) and he would then play. Green Bay really did nothing this off season to make the team better and he is still coming back. The team has stated though that they are in a rebuilding cycle for there franchise, it would make sense to rebuild a QB for their future too. but then again, I this is Brett Farve we are talking about.

I am going to end on a quote from John Madden, “If aliens landed on the earth and asked to see a football player, Brett Farve would be the person that they would take them to.”

Isn’t it amazing how blown out of proportion the media can make this? Reading Yahoo Sports they mentioned that it has “become an annual rite of winter for Packers fans, as the quarterback has contemplated retirement during the past several offseasons — only to return each time.” This has been entirely made up by the press! Not once did Favre start the retirment rumor. It was the media asking him how long he thought he could play. The very first time the answe was “I don’t know” they assumed he would retire.

Favre comming back has to be a bright spot with Packer fans. After 15 years being unarguably the best quarterback there is only two reasons he’d come back after last years season. Either Brett see’s something in the Packers organization we don’t, or his love of the game is still that strong. It isn’t the money I’ll guarentee that, not with Favre.

As for Ted Thompson beijng the man? I don’t know. He doesn’t show me much so far with the Packers. Seems like he figures he can take the money he didn’t spend in free agency home with him. There is NO reason we let Longwell go in favor of Cundiff when the like of Adam Vinatieri or that Vanderjagt. I think Thompson thought he could steal one of the two. I don’t see them drafting a great place kicker either, when’s the last time anyone did that? On the other hand we muct remember Thompson is mostly responsible for the make up of the Seahawks teams, that isn’t to bad a team. While he may not be Ron Wolf, careful anaylsis of Wolfs entire draft record is not as shiney and pristine as so many think. He really had two good years that filled in for the rest of his near flops too.

Q: What do you call a Minnesota Viking with a superbowl ring
    on his finger?

    A: A Thief!!!!

Q: Where should everyone go in MN if there is a tornado sighting?

A: The metrodome. There are never any touchdowns in there.

The PACK will be BACK!!!!!! You wait and see.

I for one think this could be a fun year in the north division. The queens hired a good coach and have cut out some of that cancer they have had on their team the last few years. The lions have some very good players if they put it together look out. The bears will have a good defense and ……. nothing else. Should be a dog fight. Don’t count out number 4 he still has a cannon for an arm.

Sure are alot of queen fans jumping on the “Bash Bret” bandwagon. Are you jealous that we have a hall of fame QB and you havent’t seen one since a guy named Fran? Or maybe your actually hiding those deep down feelings of dread that with him we may actually be able to beat you even without any other pro-bowl players on the team? I honestly don’t see the Barny gang threatening to dethrone the Steelers anytime soon. Did most of you forget that you guys have all new staff and this year should be pretty much a wash at about 8-8 till things come together. Not to mention, the prima donna type guys your front office has paid so much money for are not gonna like a disciplinarian for a coach and may begin to rebell and throw tantrums if things get too tough.
If your sick of hearing about Brett Favre, its only because your mad he didn’t play on the left side of the river.

Most Packer Fans just don’t want to see Brett Favre leave. The guy is literally the most important Packer in history, aside from Vince Lombardi. With that said I hope he stays healthy and has a decent year.

Your are right on when you say the Pack has done little or nothing to improve their team. Green Bay’s lack of effort is an embarrasment. Some of us forget Green Bay fired a coach that also never had a losing record until last year and like many of the Packer coaches hired between the Starr/Favre eras the new guy will be a disaster.

Nonetheless, because of fan ownership, history and playing in a city of less then 100,000 this team is as good as gets in professional sports.

As for the Vikes, who cares, like the North Stars they may well find a new home. Fortunately, this will never happen in Green Bay.

No he is not. He said they weren’t letting go of Sherman because of his record, but after they hired the new coach, he said they wanted to get the team back to the level it once was. I don’t think that will happen this season. Furthermore, he went back on what he said. They should have kept Sherman. This might be Ted Thompson’s last season with the Packers.

    Wade,

I don’t think this is a bash Brett thing as you said. It is obvious to everyone regardless who they cheer for that Green Bay (Thompson) hasn’t done squat to help Brett, or the team for that sake, improve themselves for this coming season. I think Brett has the juice to play another season or two, but I also think that it is very unfair to him that the organization has done squat to give him a team he can win with.

Its not a bash Green Bay/bash Minnesota thing here, so don’t try to turn it into that. Brett deserves a better team to play with than what Thompson is going to put on the field this year, and getting Brett back for another season is not going to speed up the rebuilding process when your future QB isn’t getting any playing time to polish his skills from. It would be in both Brett and the team’s best interest if he were to just move on and either retire, or ask for the chance to play for a team that has a shot of going to the SB, which unfortunately, Green Bay does not have any chance of doing before he retires.

No smack intended, just fact, that is all.

No Brett bashing taken from this Packer fan!!!

Great to see Brett come back, even if it is not the best for the team right now!!!

FIRE THOMPSON!!! I am not sure that Sherman was the best coach for the Pack, but who in the h-e-double hockey sticks fires their coach who has never had a losing season before last season!!! I don’t care what he started in Seattle!!!

Had Brett gone to a potential SB team, I probably would have rooted for them provided they were not a North team. Although, think of the records he set in Soldier field that he could have improved on had he been a Bear this year!!! He could just be enough to take them over the top.

Glad to see Brett come back and hopefully play, set some records and have a winning season.

    FIRE THOMPSON!!!

The Packers are following the Vikings by designing new uniforms. Here’s a look at Favres.

No problem Jack. I was being pretty light hearted. Shoulda used some emocons. Yes, Thompson is a moron. He didn’t do it all in Seattle, Green bays LAST coach Holmgren did mostof it. You have to bring in some big name players occasionally (IE Reggie White). I would like to see Bret start and then depending on the way the game is going, let Aaron Rodgers play the second half. We also need to pick up a decent free agent or two, and I don’t see Thompson forking over any money to do that.

Its ok, us green and gold fans have 12 or 13 championships to reflect on. They didn’t name it the Lombardi trophy for nothing. The good days will return again someday.

Every QB has off years, I just hope Farve can get it together for himself this year. I cant knock one of the best QB’s in our history who can outshine them all in a 2 minute warning. GOOD LUCK GREENBAY. FISHINFOOL

I am glad to see Favre back, but remember the two minute warning comebacks didn’t exist last year. Part of it is Brett, part poor FG kicking. And since the beginning of last year they have lost three starting offensive lineman.

Futhermore, I doubt the GM and tne new coach represent an improvement over Mike Sherman. Sherman;s biggest fault wasn’t he couldn’t control his QB. But they were always ready to play and lost several close games last year.

With that said they will compete in their division. The Bears may well have been a fluke, the Vikes almost always manage to screw up, and Detroit is nothing special.

Should be an interesting football season.
