For any of you mushroom hunters out there I went out last night and picked about 50 of them here in the metro. Left about another 40 out there because they had already dried up a bit. They must have popped after the rain on thursday so just a heads up

I thought the same thing but I was actually late by a few days I think. I was down along the bottom of a river bluff that has always put out good numbers of shrooms so I rarely look anywhere else…It may be the location but its been a odd year.
I thought my dad told me they were yellows I usually drop off a batch for him but I will take a picture of some. I am pretty sure there not greys though

Yellow’s and Whites are the same just some people call them one or the other. Would love to see pictures and where are you located?

I will take a few pics tonight… I just did some digging around on the net and they looked like black morels. I have never heard of blacks but whatever they are there tasty!

really? i have heard of people eating/harvesting the black morels just like yellows and greys. Apparently, they show up about 2-3 weeks earlier than the rest of the morels.

Cade, that may be what they are. We eat pounds of these ones every year and seem to always be earlier than the rest. Can I email them to anyone here!. I still cannot figure out how to post them but will try after lunch here!

Yep those are deffinitely black morels. I have never found one, but i have read up on my shrooms a lot there are a couple good sites out there for them. Theres one that i really reallly really liked, but can’t remember the adress, and theres this one. This is the site where i learned about black morels. theres a guy on there all the time named Chris M. And you can ask questions and he will answer them in red print. Its really handy.A ton of people wondered if they were edible as well with the blacks. They don’t look like something you would want to eat, almost like bad yellows, but they are classified as perfectly edible morels or “morchella” read up on some of the information, its actually really interesting information. Morelmushroomhunting.com I’ll have to start looking if you are finding some, plus i would like to try a black to see if it tastes the same. 1 look so far, not very hard and i found no mushrooms, but i did see mayapples coming out and there were some jack in the pulpits that were coming up, just not bloomed yet. Its almost time

btw, there are tons of false morels to look out for. yes you are correct, they have a solid stem. I personally have never seen or picked one. another morel you gotta look into are the half free morels…they look way different from morels but are edible and the same family. I guess they taste just the same. they are the same color but way different shape ect.
    False morels (pics)

these are the most similar to morels imo

these are the “half free morels” they look wierd huh?

hope this stuff helps, read some of the identification stuff…its long but its worth knowing for sure. They have a morel discussion board too

hmmmm none of those look like what I was told were fals morels… but that Verpa bohemica RU kidding? that looks VERY morel like.. hollow stem included….. what I was thinking of has a hollow stem like a morel.. but has a very large stump and a very small cap.. the folds tend to be straight lines instead of convoluted and they are usually dark brown (caps)…. oh well.. I only pick morels… but I could see making a mistake with that verpa B…

ah ha!.. the half frees.. thats what I was talking about… so they R not poisonous? oh well.. someone else can eat em…. I never find many of them anyway….

False Morels are pretty easy to notice. They look like a Brain kind of because there grooves are not very deep. The stem is also solid should you pick one. You will know it!

I’ve never hunted morels before, but have decided to take a look in the Park Reserve by my house and see if I can locate some.

My question is, what time of day is best to hunt them. Early AM? Mid day? Afternoon?

Thats what the false morels look like down here Ken, Long stem and small brown cap. I read some information this last fall where you can also eat the ones down here, never seen the black ones like the pictures above, not that dark down here.

at least he didnt shoot ya….! the sound of someone walking slowly through the woods can sound a bit like a turkey…. I remmeber a deal similar to that where I was turkey hunting with a buddy.. I told him RIGHT where I would sit.. and told him to signal if he was coming to me… so there I was calling… and I heard steps coming slowly toward me.. sounded just like a turkey.. rolled out from behind the tree and there he was.. it WAS a turkey.. my hunting partner…. then the very next day.. same thing happened… and it was another turkey.. and when I rolled out it had a 10 in beard and flew… they sounded almost exactly the same!.. good thing I dont shoot at sounds…. or Id have shot my partner….. course on the other hand.. I did miss out and a big gobbler… lol

this rain should really really really bring those shrooms out. its still early up here but this rain should do it. didn’t see any while turkey hunting this weekend. We set up the blind in one area with about 10 perfect elm trees but we were not on the south side of the hill i guess (don’t know my direction very well, we were at my uncle’s house in Gillingham, WI) and he said that it was the wrong side of the hill…I checked anyway but there were none to be found. We need one sunny day around 70-75 degrees and we’ll be picking them
