I was just wondering if anyone uses a mono leader with fireline when pulling cranks, if so what kind of line and strength and how long of a leader? Or do you just go with straight fireline? Thanks

I use about a 10 foot leader of 10-12 lb Berkely Vanish when cranking with fireline. You may be able to get away without the leader in dirty or stained water, but I find it necessary in cleaner water.

    Hope this helps.

Straight fireline, no leader is they way I go.

Ditto. Don’t know anyone who runs a mono leader off a super line.

No leader here either when cranking, but do use Vanish when doing some jigging.

I’ve never run a leader, even on lakes with awesome visibility. No issues here with fish seeming to be line shy.

Thanks guys, the few times I have ran cranks I didn’t use a leader either but saw a in-fisherman show and they were using a mono leader so I was wondering what your opinion was. Again thanks

    Use a 6-8ft Vanish leader.

I troll a lot and do it on some clear lakes (Mille Lacs) and have never had an issue where I thought the fish were spooked by my superline. I troll with some 10 lb superline that depending on the brand has 2-4 lb diamter. I use a cross-lok snap and tie direct with no leader and it works for me.

I think the issue with some people is not visibility but the stretch factor of mono. Running a length of mono is kind of a shock leader. I use long soft rods for trolling so the stretch is not an issue.

I also use fireline or spiderwire stealth, no leader. I see the point with the vanish line but I don’t find it necessary when pulling cranks. Everybody does what works for them though. We always use vanish below slip bobbers.

    I don’t use a leader with the Power-Pro on my long-line rigs.

To change topics just a bit–I have found that using a small barrel swivel between leadcore and the mono leader cuts down on the line twisting. I got that tip from someone here on IDA. Thanks!

    I don’t use a leader.

Here’s a question though.. Why use a vanish leader ? Why not just spool your reel with vanish 100% rather then just use it as a leader ?
