I live on a private lake thats about 400 acers. The pleasure boaters wanted the association to do something to control the weeds. Us fishermen want the weeds. This lake is not what one would call weed-choked. The assoc. is going to use a chemical called SONAR. Has anyone had any experience with this product and how its going to affect the lake. They want to treat it when the water temp is 60 degrees. Were located in Northern Illinois.

If its what I think it is it’ll kill stuff around the lake for awhile then the floating veggies will be worse later. enjoy now.

April 18, 2006 at 11:14 pm #439320How much pleasure boating can you do on a 400 acre lake? What is wrong with your association? I can tell you it won’t have a possitive effect on the ecology. How bad are the weeds anyway?
April 18, 2006 at 11:19 pm #439322I would fight that to the end. Get a lawyer if you have to. They are trying to kill off native weeds. It WILL have any impact on the fishery. Too many people are trigger happy to dump weedkiller. Its way too common and since its a private lake, the DNR could careless. Start a petition if you have to. We will support you..
April 19, 2006 at 10:27 pm #439642Everybody seems to have a pontoon or ski boat. We have a 17′ ski or fishing boat limit w/ 75hp max. Pontoons cant be over 20′. For cruising speeds or skiing; you must go in a counter-clockwise fashion or you are fined. As far as the amount of weeds its mostly in the back bays as of now. At the fish club meetings were told that one guy that lives in one of the bays is the one pressing the issue. And he happens to be a board member. Its politics in my view. Us fishermen are cretainly in the minority. This really burns me. Ive lived and fished this lake for over 20 years. It used to have alot more weeds untill about 13 years ago they treated the lake and didnt even tell anyone. After that you couldnt find a weed for the next 10 years. The last couple years the weeds have been coming back ; and the fishing was improving. Im telling you ist getting like a little Chicago out here. As for the fishing; its said that its the best managed lakes in the area. We have the state record tiger musky; Ive personally caught 4 walleyes over 30″; Largemouth bass to 25″; 10″ gills and 14″ crappies. Oh I should mention; all this was before they killed the weeds the first time. They used to run 2 of them weed cutting boats 5 days a week. The assoc. has said they want to “nip it at the bud” Politics They do have a no wake time on the lake from 8pm to 10am————–H
April 19, 2006 at 10:45 pm #439646How deep is the lake? Is it spring fed? My concern would be possible winterkill if they kill the weeds off again.
April 20, 2006 at 1:03 am #439668We have a few 400 acre-sized lakes here in Southern Wisconsin and trust me, there can be nearly 100 watercraft at once on those lakes during a nice, summer weekend…
CRAZY!!!
April 20, 2006 at 1:43 am #439679In the State of Illinois chemicals applied to waters need a State Permit applied by a licensed person. Check your state IEPA regulations and also call your county Health Dept see if you have a Division of Enviornmental Health. What county are you in. Who is paying for this treatment?? To control a 400 acre lake you will need lots of money for application. Liquid Sonar 1 gallon treats 4-6 acres for $2000.00 plus application. The weeds you want kill are probably Eurasion Milfiol not native to our area. It is not a easy task or cost effective. Good Luck I hope someone in youe association is doing their homework.
April 20, 2006 at 2:14 pm #439821Deepest sis bout 30″ thats where the creek chanel is at. It is spring fed but also has a large watershed of farm country.———H
April 20, 2006 at 2:38 pm #439832Yes it does get nuts out there on weekends. Your risking your life if your a skier or tubing. The maintainance dept. has one person that has been trained. This will be his practice lake im guessing. ——————–H
