How I spent my Easter Weekend…

My girlfriend’s father is digging a lake on his property up near Duluth and bought an excavator after the rental hours started piling up last season.
When he first offered to let me have a go of it I didn’t think it was going to be that big a deal.
2.5 hours later he had to pry the key out of the ignition to get me to come back to the house for supper… lol
Nothing like knocking down trees with the flick of a switch and moving a couple yards of dirt at a time.
April 17, 2006 at 1:39 pm #438771what, are you making your own lake now !!! thats one big unit.

Does this mean you are going to start dredging the back channel for better bass habitat around Red Wing?
It would be a heck of a long drive. Even in “high range” I bet that unit won’t hit 5 MPH over ground. But the power is incredible. I was surprised to find out how reasonably industrial units can be purchased used. He picked up his machine for less than I would have to spend on a 2 year old 4 X 4 truck.

Only, except, I don’t have much time for ponds..
Usually around high pressure pipeline, or sprints fiber optic cable..
We have to be “easier” with our flick of the wrists…April 17, 2006 at 2:48 pm #438809Sorry James, but that mental picture of you at the controls of a machine like that just scares me.
Anyone else??????April 17, 2006 at 2:55 pm #438812Put a machine of that size in the wrong hands “look out” something bads going to happen!
April 17, 2006 at 3:01 pm #438815I bet you had fun. I ran one for the first time last year on a jobsite,….I didn’t want to stop playing either..
April 17, 2006 at 3:44 pm #438834Well I suppose we have to call you
“Digger James Deere Holst”
So when you comin back to the River??????????April 17, 2006 at 4:02 pm #438842I’m back on the river tomorrow.
Those excavators are surprisingly easy to run. Took about 15 minutes to get the hang of some of the compound movements that can be accomplished with the joy sticks. After that it was “how deep and where?”
My only road bump happened when I dumped a big bucket of sloppy wet soil pulled from below the water table from a height of 15′ or so onto the spoil pile.
You guessed it, the windows were open and I ended up wearing quite a bit of it… lol
As long as DeZurik isn’t around nobody bleeds. If Steve was there I wouldn’t have allowed myself within 100′ of the darn thing.

Personally, I like the air, and cd player going…
If you have the air on, usually the windows are shut…
However, the pipeline guru’s don’t like it when you have the windows closed and the air on…I just can’t figure out why..Here is what gets me going, digging over and around sprints fiber optic cable…it is smaller than your pinky, and you are using a big machine, that can rip trees out in seconds…
The best part, if you touch, and I mean touch that cable, you will cut it…and that costs a million dollars a minute…April 18, 2006 at 7:40 pm #439242I spent most of the day on Sunday getting my girlfriends fishing line out of tree’s and off of shore, and off of the trolling motor, and the big motor and so on and so on…………
