My good friend Jim Wendland from Milbank, SD fished the Columbia River a couple weeks ago with 3 of his friends. They used similar techniques to what we use here on the Mississippi but the consistent size of their catch was incredible, not one fish under 8 pounds. The big girl came in at 15.1#, measured 34 inches long and had a 20 inch girth. They released most of their fish but kept the big one for the wall…a true trophy. Thanks Jim for sharing with our IDA members.

    Awesome fish
Did they go out there on their own or did they have a guide? We’re planning on going out there some time; but, it’s a pretty far haul for us so I’d rather fly out there and hire a guide I guess (although it would be fun to take our tackle and our boat)…. since they went out there, do they know any good guides out there?
    Thanks
    Jenn

Yes Jenn, one of the guys in Jim’s party knew of a guide out there so they had him and his boat. I’ll let you know who it was once I talk to Jim. He told me it was a great time so I assume he was happy with the guide.

Steve, sure I’ll share what Jim told me. They fished in 40 feet of water (I don’t know how deep it is out in that river) and trolled cranks. Jim said the cranks were not the standard variety we use here and did not know the name or make of them. I’ll explore some more on this and see if I can figure it out. In addition, I saw a picture of one of the guys with a spinner setup and a night crawler (3 way rig). I don’t believe they casted any riprap or sand flats but mostly fished the deep water. Maybe that is what works this time of year on that body of water. I’ll also get the name of that guide and post it. Jim is out of town for a few days so it might take me a week before I can reach him.
