Just wanted to share a story with everyone. I know that many of you talk about your kids on this site so I want to share a story about mine. I have a 7 year old Daughter and a 4 year old son. I am doing everything that I can to introduce them to the outdoors, especially fishing. My daughter came up to me on Saturday morning and asked if I would take them fishing for the day. I had no other plans so we loaded up the truck and off to Chisago we went. I have taken them fishing before but in the past the attention span was so short it made for no time on the water. However this day was different. Both my daughter and my son spent the entire time on the ice asking me real questions about fishing. My son at 4 even wanted me to teach him how the vexilar worked. Well after 10 minutes of insruction the vexilar left my hole and was in his. It was amazing he sat for the next 3 hours and literally gave me a play by play of what was going on under the ice. He even got it down to “here comes one, bang, fish on dad”. My daughter and son spent the rest of the day taking turns in the vexilar hole. It almost made me cry. We spent 10 hours on the lake and managed to bring home 25 nice bluegills. There is still 20 inches of ice on Chisago so I am really hoping my kids ask me to take them next weekend. I am even going as far as planning a trip to LOTW with both of them next year. By the way I don’t think there is a chance in hell I will ever get to use my vexilar with those 2 in the house. Time to get another. Love2Fish.

That, my friend is what it is all about. Thanks for sharing
Yes, that is EXACTLY what it’s about!
My Son will be 2 next month and my Daughter will be 4 in June. They both have their fishing poles and I can’t wait to take them. My Daughter been out a few times and already loves it. I can’t wait to get them out fishing!!
Again, thanks for sharing.
March 27, 2006 at 8:41 pm #433711That is a great story. My son will turn 4 this summer and I’m hoping that his patience has developed a bit since last summer. It’s great to have him with me in the boat, but it was hard work last year to keep him occupied without getting a hook injury.

It just doesn’t get any better than that
Here’s hoping they ask again soon
As far as equipment goes, my theory has been with the kids when they were younger, and the wife, once they learn to use it, buy them whatever it is you use or would want. They get their own, and you get a spare
Thanks for sharing, you made my daydave

March 28, 2006 at 12:07 pm #433871Awesome story!
My son will be 4 this summer as well and I cannot wait to get him out fishing this year in the boat. He went out with me a couple times last year and it was a blast. A couple fishing rods, a boat full of snacks, drinks and toys as well as my 8yr old yellow lab. IT was so much fun. We lasted about 3 hours and caught a handful of smallies together and then my son asked me in the most sincere voice “Dad, can we stop at the Dairy Queen on the way home?”Priceless!
March 28, 2006 at 3:31 pm #433922I was in the same boat as you last year. My kids are now 5 and 7 and the few times i did get them in the boat in years past, the attention span was about 1 hour tops. This last summer however, there was abig change. You always hear that you should introduce kids to fishing by taking them bluegill fishing so they can get some action and hopefully get “hooked” on fishing. Well, last spring I took the kids to Upper Red Lake in search of those huge crappies. It was a beautiful day and we managed to catch 20+ crappies. But the bonus was we caught over 40+ 2 pound walleyes. After that day of fishing they are always asking, “When can we go to Red Lake?” I can not wait to get back there this spring and get some crappies and even more so, keep some of those walleyes. Spending time with the kids in the boat is priceless. Hopefully your kids will continue to enjoy fishing as much as mine do.
March 29, 2006 at 3:26 pm #434171Here is a picture of my son Tyler late last summer with his first real fish by himself. You guys may remember seeing him at the Everts GTG last July or maybe on Pool 2 this spring.
Please, don’t think that I am trying to turn him to the dark side by putting him on grass carp. As you know these fish are easy to catch on a T-rigged tube in shallow water.
I was and still am very proud of him.
March 29, 2006 at 6:53 pm #434207I’ve got a 2 year old…I cannot wait for the day when he and I can get out in the boat together. I can remember when my dad and even my grandpa use to take me out…memories I will always have.
March 29, 2006 at 10:11 pm #434233Great story Love2Fish. My boys are grown but that brings back memories of when they were that age. Cherish those moments – before you know it they grow up.
