Ordering fishing rods….how do they arrive?

I’ve been checking out some rods in Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas online catalogs. I noticed that if a rod is over a certain length, and generally it’s about 8′, they charge an extra $6 per rod. When you order rods, how do they come? Every time I’ve ever ordered rods, they come packaged together in a tube or in a PVC type holding device, wrapped in plastic, taped in place, and packaged firmly on top and bottom to make sure they don’t break. Has anyone ever received rods in the mail that were individually packaged?

I spoke to Cabelas about this because they, along with Bass Pro Shops, have policies stating that they will charge $6 PER ROD for shipping, as if they are individually packaged. I had the customer service girl get her supervisor and I informed them that all rods, to my knowledge, are packaged together. Based on this, they are overcharging $6 for every rod after the first one. What do you think?

Normally cardboard tube. High end rods may come in their own plastic tube/case.

A 1 lb package from Minnesota to Texas will cost $3.95 Parcel Post and $4.05 Priority Mail.

The same 1 lb. with the dimensions of 84″x 3″x 3″ will cost $19.04 Parcel Post and $20.80 Priority Mail.

The $6.00 does not seem so bad.

I just ordered 2 rods (2piece) and a reel. Any rod over 6′ that is not 2 piece, has $6.00 more per rod. It also said that I was getting 3 packages ? We will see friday.

I just received 2 rods from Cabelas Monday the rods were packed in seperate tubes inside of two boxes. They are not ripping you off as they were sent out UPS and thats not cheap not to mention the packing. The rods arrived undamaged and in great shape. Hope this tells you what you needed to know.
