Plastic Oil Lines on Outboards

If you have an older outboard with oil injection that uses clear plastic tubing for its oil lines, it is advisable to change them. Last fall I found a few drops of 2-cycle oil on the garage floor below my Merc 150 and eventually tracked it down to being a cracked oil line. The plastic had broken down from the oil and crumbled in my hand when I replaced it. I was lucky and didn’t have any motor problems, but it would be easy to lose a powerhead this way.

Literally a $.25 item that could blow a motor.

Good point. I had the same problem a few years ago with my Mercury XR4 150, but didn’t catch it in time. Poof! Bye, Bye motor.
