I received a letter from Action Marine Service, here in S.E. Wisconsin, with the following paragraph.
“For those of you that own a 2 stroke Mercury, Mariner or Force outboard 1997 and older with square fuel pumps. It has been determined that the fuel pumps are failing the check valves and it is recommended that the fuel pump is replaced to prevent fuel starvation and possible blown power heads. This is not a recall from Mercury but a service advisory mailed to us by them. You can check this by taking the hood off and checking the fuel pump, if it is square and is 1997 and older it will fail and needs to be replaced. The service advisory number is 2001-17″

Thanks Lucky, I’ll have to take a look on mine.

Is there a place online I can read this?

Don’t know, just a spring service reminder with that paragraph in it.

Jeremiah, let us know if you find out anything. I am going to try to give merc a call for the info. DK

I talked to a rep at Merc. Apparently this service advisory isn’t available to the public but only Mercury Dealers. She couldn’t send me a copy but refered me to a Mercury dealer in the area where it should be available for viewing. She could tell me the motors that were included.

    Force: 1994 1/2 and newer- 40hp thru 120hp
    1997 and newer- Jet

    Merc/Mariner: 1987 and newer-30hp thru 250hp

She told me that the consumer would be financially responsible for the replacement of the fuel pump (if you have that particular fuel pump) unless it is still covered under warranty. Mine, like Slops, is Silver and Red and too old to be covered under warranty! Guess I’ll have to look under the hood and see whats there.

I talked to a connection of mine and got a copy of the service “advisory”, number 2001-17.

It is a 6 page fax.

If anyone needs this, shoot me a PM with your fax number and I’ll get it to you.

Otherwise, any Merc service shop should be able to supply you a copy if requested.

If you are mechanically inclinded and know how to use a vacuum gauge (digital is preferred), you can do this at home.

If not, take your motor in.

It really isn’t that big of a deal, if you have your motor serviced like you are suppose to……

What is the criteria to qualify for a recall versus a service advisory?

Would it be possible to scan this Service Advisory and post a copy on this thread? If not, I’d appreciate a copy as an email attachment.

    Thanks.
