Either one works, depending on how you like to fish. If you have a tiller boat and you are comfortable in the back, go with a good transom mount. If you don’t mind having to walk up to the front of the boat to deploy the bow mount, then that is what I would do.
On most days, I myself prefer a bow mount. I don’t mind shutting the big motor down and then moving to the front to use the trolling motor. For me, I have better control with a bow mount. It seems they are a little quicker to manuever. But, there are days when I would like to have a transom mount when I am dragging baits.

Do you want to catch them on the left side of their mouth, or the right side?

I am joking. Walleye don’t care! But I can offer you some advice on technique using both, and you tell us what you would like to do.

Many IDA anglers use a bow mount so that they can jig two rods. You cannot do that effectively with aft mounted motor. If you are going to drag, or slip in the current, you would want a bow mount, as an aft mount would make it near impossible if you planned to fish two lines.

So, if it were me, and versitility is the key, then a bow mount is the ticket! With a bow mount you can also get an AutoPilot or Co-pilot, something you cannot do with an aft mount.

What type of fishing do you do most?

When I was younger and had transom mounts on my flats, it always seeme harder to control the boat because my hands were constantly messing with the trolling motor.

Not sure what kind of boat you have, but I think once you get used to a foot controlled bow mount, you’ll find it much easier to control the boat and fish at the same time.

not sure if that helps, but just my experience.

I don’t think I could ever run one on the transome. Like Tuck said,….you just have more water in your face with a bow mount. Having a Marcum attached to bow mount allows me 2 hands, and I can carefully watch my depth with a flasher on the bow. Doing all this on a transome just seems troublesome. I envy the guy with both.

    Welcome to IDA TWISTER!!!
I agree with the others a bow mount is the way to go but this is a personal preference.

It’s all personal preferance, I like to sit in the back when I walleye fish. Just so I don’t have to move back and forth in the boat. Like this sat. in the 3 foot rollers I wouldn’t have wanted to be standing in the front of the boat. I have both on my boat so it’s up to me on that day, I usually go with the transom 85% of the time. Just my 2 cents
