Anywhere to find out what your old motor may be worth. I have a 1996 60 horse Johnson to trade in for a new 60 horse.

How much you looking to get for it, I might be interesed in it. There is a kelly blue book for boats. Pm me if you would like to sell it outright.

My guess is anywhere from $900 to $1,200. I just traded in a 1995 Evinrude SPL 88HP and the range was $1,200 to $1,800. With the new E-Tec and the four strokes I was actually suprised it was worth that much. And yes, beyond that the E-Tec was discounted first so the bottom line between a new 90 HP E-TEC which lists for about $9,000 and my old motor was $6,100.

    Good luck on your trade.

Not to sound harsh, but don’t get any high expectations. What we as sellers want and what dealers are willing to give is downright theft on the part of the dealers Whatever the low side of the value is, expect at least a 25% reduction off of that and you might be in the ballpark. Then go back a few weeks later and see what they have for a price tag on the motor

When you go back notice the following things, building, employee’s, parts, boats, motors, accessories, lights, heat, trucks, trailers, forklifts, tools, computors ,ect, ect.

Ask the owner if he is insured. Liability? Workers comp on the employee’s? Fire, theft? Insurance on his vehicles?

Ask him if he has a wife? kids? dog? cat?

The point being, (and I’m not ripping anybody here) is that he has exspenses, far more then you do. Is it stealing? Well you can look at it that way or you can look at it as he is trying to feed his family and employee’s family’s. Would you deny him that right?

Everybody knows you will get far more money selling outright then to a dealer. Lets not call them theives.

My opinion on buying or selling used marine equipment to dealers still stays the same. I don’t mind getting ripped for my opinion on that
But, I will agree that you are far better off trying to sell outright. You will be able to get a fair market value by doing so

There is a place in the cities that handles old outboards. Anyone remember their name?

Twincitiesoutboards?A good place to get obsolete parts.Seem reasonably priced.Nothing worse than dealing with some yokel on fleabay sending the wrong part,or a “I don’t know” what this part fits.

I don’t mind paying extra dealer vs private if the dealer backs up what they sell.I have seen guys pay more than they should on ebay .If the dealer takes motor in on trade for say 600.00,puts in 300.00 to recondition it,and resells it for 1200.00 with 90 day warranty, that isn’nt so bad.

But I can see where Wats is at,been there, done that.Bought a new Merc 25 ELH in the box for not much more than used.

Great, thanks for the link, I did not know where to go with just the web address given earlier. Turns out it is a 1997 model I purchased in September of 1996. It is a remote steering. I would like to keep my stainless prop if it will fit on the new model. I will find out all of the other options I have when I go to lock up the deal and let everyone know if it is for sale.
