The Kids are ready!

Spent the last hour “fishing” in the staircase of our spit level home. The kids were on top with their new spincast combo’s dropping sinkers down to the basement level. We started out just bouncing the weight off the floor in our living room and then moved to the staircase. The stairs was harder for them because they couldn’t see the weight, and the depth changes with each stair. It was especially fun when I grabbed onto their line and gave it a big jerk – “FISH ON” they yelled.

Fun time. I was amazed at how quickly my 6 year old was able to “walk” the sinker up the stair case, bouncing it along and reeling in as she went – my 4 year old did alright too!

I’ve had the kids out in the boat with me on Lake Pepin trolling cranks many, many times. This activity only lasts about an hour before they lose interest. We’ve also been at the pottery pond countless times bobber fishing – that is better because the little bluegills are very willing, but they want to be busy all the time.

I’m thinking of trying some lindy rigs and jigs out on Pepin this summer with them. At least they’ll stay active, and maybe be able to keep at it a while longer. It’s just that I don’t have much confidence in live bait since I’m always trolling cranks. I’m sure, though that if I put a crawler or leach on a circle hook and have them fish some of the points and edges something will bite – even if it’s sheepies.

Can’t wait for all the outings to come where I might not do much fishing helping the kids. A very different kind of fun.

Any tips from all you moms and dads out there that were successful getting their kids to love fishing would be great!

Snacks, books, toys and mix in some boat rides. Keep it interesting and mix it up. If it gets boring they won’t want to go. Have fun!

have faith in the live bait me and my 2 daughters hit the river a lot last summer usually for walleye or bass. towards the end of the season it proved to be as much fun just drifting crawlers while targeting game fish but it was really neat to see their eyes light up at the several different species we would catch(mooneyes) seemed to be the most exciting of catches for some reason. very educational as well for them i thought. any fish is fun to catch….even a catfish

I’ve had very good luck pulling live bait on Pepin in the same areas that I troll cranks. I usually three-way my bait.
Don’t overlook the basic spinner rig and crawler setup. It works well too.

Sounds like fun! Can I come over to your house?

As far as getting kids hooked on fishing, my son (3 years old) and I have a great time just going to Gander Mountain or Ace Hardware to look at all of the gear. Nothing makes him happier than being allowed to pick out a few twister tails, grubs, and worms. He also loves to go through all of my tackle and help me reorganize it.

I think it is also important to get your kids to enjoy time on the water, not just fishing. When the little guy goes with me I make sure we have some good snacks with us, let him “drive” the boat, and it he wants to dump out the crawlers and play with them, so be it. If he is having a good time in the boat, not just from fishing, then it is alright with me.

When I take the Grandkids fishing here, we always end up doing some wading. Looking for pretty stones, shells and the like. They look forward to it. Also take hats and sun glasses sun screen for them.

ANy time you mix live bait and pool #4, you can get the kids to pick up a few “sheep” eyes. And kids love them things. As soon as the kids run out of patience for game fish, throw a few rougies there way. May get you a few more hours on the water, and get them some fish.

With one on the way, I need to get a better idea of how to spend more water time, and still spend time with the kids! Great idea of the stairway. Sounds like a good fix for me when I can’t get out.
