Hey all you four-stroke engine guys, just got my first boat and have some performance/general maintenance questions?

Do any of you run synthetic (Ams Oil) in the engine? The sales guy said it is not recommended as it is too thin, and just to run regular oil? If not what are one or two Great brands of engine oil to run? I don’t want a Chevy or Ford debate, but I will put Ams Oil Gear lube in my lower unit, just wondering what oil to go with for best protection, life and performance in the motor.

Thanks for your input, I greatly appreciate it!!

    Well here’s my 2 cents worth…
I used the manufacturer’s brand oil until the warranty expired – I didn’t want to deal with a ‘don’t ya know you have to use brand ABC of oil’ in case anything did happen… I do a lot of trolling and my oil seemed dark/dirty (no other side effects) so I went to Mobil 1 and it worked very good – no oil consumption on either brand but the oil sure stayed clear compared to the regular oil….

    My two cents

If the engine is brand new run the recomended oil for the first few changes. Then I would switch to synthetic. The synthetics are much slipry`er and the rings will take longer to seat. If it`s used then I would switch it next change.

synth. oil of the same weight is not really any thinner when ay operating temp. It will not hurt your motor. But you will want to run 1 or 2 oil changes with regular oil to break in the rings. It will break in with synth but will take longer and you could have oil consumption issues until the rings seat. So I would break in with regular oil.

I am currently running AMSOIL in my F115.
