Need to be careful with the wires, they are color coded different than in a boat. Green or bare copper is ground, white is hot, black is neutral. To be safe find the breaker and make sure the power is off, heck while you are at the breaker panel, shut off some other “non essential” things of hers and blame it on moving the ceiling fans around, if she starts in , hand her the screwdriver and pliers and say have at it.
Sorry Fireman, you have your colors mixed up! The colored wire (black, red, yellow, etc) is always hot, white is always neutral, and green is always ground.
A good investement would be a “buzz” tester. It will tell you when there is power to a circuit simply by pushing the button and getting it near the wire. They are about $20 and you can get them at any home store.
BrianK, remember that many ceiling fans have (2) wires feeding them, one for light and one for the fan, so make sure the way they are disconnected is the same way you wire the new fan.
Good luck.
