Yesterday at Evert’s, the guys from Lake Assault Boats were test beating a boat they made for the Eden Prarie Fire Department. What a rig that was! I got to drive an 18 foot tiller with a 90 Suzuki on it. That rig does 43 MPH! I thought they would be dogs compared to smaller boats due to their immense size! It was a lot of fun. I gave them an IDA card to post pictures up with. Hopefully we will see some soon!

    Is this a bass boat?

    No.

This would be the Kenworth to your Volkswagon.

This would be a destroyer to your Dingy.

I think the bass version is called “Lake Insult”

    Tuck,

I saw that thing when I got to the landing. What a beast! I’d like to have that thing in some nasty Mille Lacs wind. Was it a pretty smooth ride?

I got to see one at a Duluth Sports Show and was impressed with the quality of workmanship. I thought they would be doggy too..they are built like a tank.

I have wondered about the hull design and how it would handle in the rough stuff.

This is a boat I have been very curious about.

Fishing Mille Lacs a lot I have seen Ivan Brandt with his custom made Lake assault boat. It handles really well in rough water. Last spring we both we fishing the same structure in some decent waves. He was able to hold position really well with his vantage trolling motor. Back trolling into the waves with ease…I think this boat is sweet…never rode in one though. Looks to handle rough water without a problem…
    Just my opinion though!

    That is a good speed!!!

Tuck, was she “Squirley” at all???

My assumption is that this thing must be fairly light, to get 43mph out of a 90 hp on an 18′ boat…….I take it she rides on top of the water pretty good? Maybe a rough rider???

I have been to their factory/store/office a couple times. The people are very nice and these guys can make about anything. The store is located on the south side of HWY 10 between Ramsey and Elk River. It is in a little strip mall, so look hard.

It rode nose down like a Ranger, and really cut through the water with ease. They had the big “Fire” boat out, and I was jumping it’s wake with it. Something I wouldn’t do with many other boats. At that speed anyway. It is Ginormous inside. I told the guy I would need Binocs just to see my electronics!
They are a lot lighter and more nimble than they look. Now I need to drive the River Pro and I can say I have accomplished my mission in life.

    Tuck,

That is really good speed for that motor. Do you know what kind of prop they had on the Suzuki? My 90 Suzuki / 1750 Fishhawk runs 39-40 mph with a 19″ stock prop.

No I don’t. I am hoping the guy logs on. I wouldn’t have believed it, but I saw it. I can tell you that the motor was winding out pretty good! I would suspect a smaller diameter prop. But that is just a guess.

If thats the boat with the Enginsteer power tiller, I took it for a spin last spring at their open house.

It shot out of the water nice and was very responsive.

All custom built to your specs. Very sturdy strong boats.

Being a metal fabricator myself, it was cool to talk to the owner about manufaturing the boats.

This would be a great river boat for year around use.

    Chris,

I also drove that same boat about 4PM Wed. Here is my impression:.

At the end of the day my fishing partner, Darrell, and I started talking with, Jeff, one of the owners of Lake Assault boats http://www.lakeassault.com/ They were testing out a new boat and also had an 18′ tiller boat with an Enginesteer http://www.enginesteer.com/ on a 90 hp Suzuki.

We took the 18’ Lake Assault for a test drive (along with Jeff the owner) and it was unlike any boat I have ever seen or been in. The boat is completely aluminum, no wood, non-slip maintenance free AL diamond plate flooring, all AL transoms, no plastic, no carpet, no vinyl, no fiberglass— just heavy duty welded AL everyplace. It appeared to be built like a battleship with a huge open floor space and two 10-foot rod lockers. The driver’s seat was like a kitchen chair with rubber on the tips of the 4 legs — the chair could be picked up and moved anyplace in the boat. The boat was very stable and surprisingly fast for something that big with a 90hp on it. Jeff said the 18’ hull weighed about 1300lbs and is priced about 10% higher than the competition. This boat should never need any maintenance and be just as good in 100 years as it is now.

The Enginesteer was also something else – I could steer it from idle to full speed with two fingers — without any trimming. It was really fun to zig zag through the small icebergs floating in the river. You could even let go of the tiller handle at full speed and it will never change direction.

I mentioned to Darrell that driving this boat was more fun than catching walleyes (he disagreed with me on that point) but I was the one doing the driving.

Anyway, when I get another boat I will definitely look further into the Lake Assault boat and the Enginesteer steering system. I am still smiling from that test drive

    Hey Chris!
Did you hang over the bow and yell “King of the world!”?

Personally I like to re-enact the scene from ‘Titantic’ in the car with the girl. But that’s just me.

Better yet, re-enact the scene from “What about Bob” Where Bill Murry is strapped to the mast.

These things look and sound like really sweet boats. Now where is my Powerball ticket…
