Took on the project of re-plumbing my 60 year old house, the first thing I will say is if you have an old house, the insides of your old pipes are disgusting! The next thing I will say is thank God I didn’t become a plumber, I don’t care what they pay you guy’s its not enough. I went with 3/4 copper tubing and sweated the pipes together. It actually wasn’t that bad, I do have to go back and re-work one small area because I forgot to sweat one pipe end. Once you forget to sweat one of these pipes you have to completely drain the whole works. Oh well, overall it has been a pretty successful project and if you ever come to my house, you can come with the comfort of having the cleanest water I can provide

    I hear ya Big Pike!

I’ve done some up grading…shower in a showerless bathroom, water softener, outside faucet.

    That was enough for me!

I thought I would save a few pennies by using “used” fittings when I could. I think it was on my 5th leaking joint…and after draining all the water out (again) I decided to always use new. No one said I was a fast learner!

I have a sink I need to put in the basement for giving the boys a bath…and I’ve been thinking of excuses ever since the favorite wife put it on the list.

Sweating pipes puts persperation on my forehead!

Now I need to make a golf trophy with copper fittings.
    When will the madness end.

    BigPike,

You must be a glutton for punishment Sweating pipes stinks big time. I redid a bathroom and broke down and bought the tool for PEX fitting from Menards. Best $100 I ever spent. It goes so fast, looks neat, and I don’t have any of those burn marks on my hands, face, or arms

Congrats on finishing a big project.

There is a reason they call plumbers “Turd herders”

Last time I had to propane torch out it ended up being a big project. I developed a pinhole leak in a 1/2″ elbow. Went to shut the water supply off at the main and the stem on the globe vave broke off!!! Had to call the water dept to leave the tool for shutting the supply off outside which is in my driveway. While working on the plumbing, I left the shutoff tool sticking up in the driveway. My wife drove home and didn’t see the tool sticking up and ran right over the top of it bending a nice 90 deg angle in the tool!

When I went to Home Deopt to get my fittings to make the repair, they had fittings with the solder already in the female end of each joint. I bought a bunch of those. Very slck! Keeps a hand free when sweating your joints. All you need to do is clean and flux each joint, assemble, the heat until you see solder sweat out of each joint.
