Did you see they were kind of trying to cover this up. VP was back in Washington before it made the news. It took a day to get reported? Weird….maybe they are afraid it would be a trend? I could get used to shooting lawyers and even Republican ones at that
February 13, 2006 at 7:01 pm #420195What’s the point in grazing them? Just makes them madder. Just like a .22 isn’t suitable for shooting deer, a 28 guage isn’t enough gun for taking down rich lawyers.
February 13, 2006 at 7:07 pm #420198I think it just highlights the dangers in hunting with someone who (I assume) only picks up a gun once or twice a year….. Pretty much the reason I don’t hunt anymore.

February 13, 2006 at 7:13 pm #420199Not to change the subject but did you see face the nation last night. The guy who was talking said that after libby gave his testimony to the investigators about who gave the orders to leak who that spie was, Valerie Bluime, that it was his superior or superiors that told him to do it. He further said that if it was infact Cheney he would have broken the law because during time of war (Iraq) its illegal to let out who any spies names are. He said that if it was Cheney who gave those orders to leak this out he would have to resign from the position of vice president or be impeached because of the way our national laws are written because this is a top national security issue. He said he has no doubt the spies name, Valerie pluime, was leaked because of an ill fated political agenda. I wonder who up the line from Cheney also knew this was taking place.
February 13, 2006 at 7:22 pm #420202Ya James i hear what your saying, I don’t think much of rich lawyers that don’t want to work honestly for a person eigther.
February 13, 2006 at 7:33 pm #420205Not to change the subject but what did you all think of the Wellstone Memorial II last week. Classy bunch!

February 13, 2006 at 7:39 pm #420208Not to change the subject… but how about Dale Jr! Coming from behind to take 2nd! WHOOOHOOO
February 13, 2006 at 8:08 pm #420222Now I am the probably the last one to defend lawyers and my comments should not be construed as such! However, I have a theory that the lawyer Cheney shot was a Democrat for two reasons, 1.) Cheney is reportedly a good shot and 2.) was also reportedly shooting downhill. Every one knows that if the victim was a Republican lawyer, he would have been talking the high ground. Therefore, the real question is, in my mind, was it an accidental shooting or……. ?
February 13, 2006 at 8:15 pm #420226An ‘Honest Lawyer’???? I believe that may well be the Grandmother of all Oxymorons!
February 14, 2006 at 12:12 am #420275I smell an out of court settlement, probably make him secretary of health and human services
February 14, 2006 at 1:36 am #420292Cheney “might” be in trouble, what with the Plame investigation, Abramoff, the dubious WMD claims, but heck, now he’s really in it. He shot a lawyer. I pity the fool!
I see a long, overseas trip in his future.February 14, 2006 at 4:17 am #420335Isn’t it the Marines that say “If it’s worth shooting once, it’s worth shooting twice”?
February 14, 2006 at 5:09 am #420361I read the news articles on the ‘net and in the paper on this story. The part that disappoints me (but doesn’t surprise me in the least) is the level of ignorance and stupidity that these reporters show when they report on a story like this. One article referred to the “birdshot” used in the 28 gauge. I always thought birdshot was loaded in a .22 casing and had an effective range of less than 20 feet on a good day. Then they proceeded to explain how the attorney moved forward out of their line to retrieve a bird. He contributed to the flushing of a covey of quail that Cheney shot at. Now, its been several years since I attended a hunting safety course, but I do remember that the hunter is responsible for making certain that nothing but his target is in his line of fire, and for making a safe shot. Whatever other circumstances occurred, it looks to me like Cheney is at fault. Any and all personal opinions of Cheney aside, he is liable. As many gun advocates say, “Guns don’t shoot people, people shoot people.” Accidents happen, but he shot someone.
February 14, 2006 at 12:04 pm #420375Sorry to tell you this the reporters have it right. A 28 gauge is a shotgun. It is slightly smaller thatn a 20ga. They do shoot birdshot. The shot comes in all kinds of sizes, most popular is 4 or 6 shot for birds and possibly 7 1/2 or 8 for quail.
I think you are thinking of the little .22 shot shells. Yeah they are worthless.
Plus just read today that he only got a WARNING citation for not hunting with the proper stamp. if it were me or you we would have gotten a real citation.

Rank hath its privilege!
February 14, 2006 at 2:17 pm #420425Can you imagine if the roles were reversed and Cheney was the one shot! Just a thought
February 14, 2006 at 2:38 pm #420437All I know is I’ve heard idiots on the news say “buckshot” 3x! Do any of those morons do any research anymore?

February 14, 2006 at 2:50 pm #420448Keep in mind also, that these guys were surrounded by secret service agents. I have a hard time believing anyone was unaccounted for in this group. I’m betting that it was an accident where the gun just went off. Poor safety protocols. Either he had his finger on the trigger or the safety was off. A stumble or a twitch and his buddies eatin lead. (Ok, steel.)
February 14, 2006 at 3:06 pm #420458Regardless of the impressions my previous airy posts on this subject may have left, I believe the shooting was purely and simply an accident!

I disagree. I think this guy knew too much.February 14, 2006 at 5:14 pm #420516From CNN:
“Late Show with David Letterman,” CBS
“Good news, ladies and gentlemen, we have finally located weapons of mass destruction: It’s Dick Cheney.”
“But here is the sad part — before the trip Donald Rumsfeld had denied the guy’s request for body armor.”
“We can’t get Bin Laden, but we nailed a 78-year-old attorney.”
“The guy who got gunned down, he is a Republican lawyer and a big Republican donor and fortunately the buck shot was deflected by wads of laundered cash. So he’s fine. He took a little in the wallet.”
“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” NBC
“Although it is beautiful here in California, the weather back East has been atrocious. There was so much snow in Washington, D.C., Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fat guy thinking it was a polar bear.”
“That’s the big story over the weekend. … Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter, a 78-year-old lawyer. In fact, when people found out he shot a lawyer, his popularity is now at 92 percent.”
“I think Cheney is starting to lose it. After he shot the guy he screamed, ‘Anyone else want to call domestic wire tapping illegal?’ “
“Dick Cheney is capitalizing on this for Valentine’s Day. It’s the new Dick Cheney cologne. It’s called Duck!”
“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” Comedy Central
The show’s segment titles included “Cheney’s Got a Gun,” “No. 2 With a Bullet” and “Dead-Eye Dick.”
“Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a man during a quail hunt … making 78-year-old Harry Whittington the first person shot by a sitting veep since Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton, of course, (was) shot in a duel with Aaron Burr over issues of honor, integrity and political maneuvering. Whittington? Mistaken for a bird.”
“Now, this story certainly has its humorous aspects. … But it also raises a serious issue, one which I feel very strongly about. … Moms, dads, if you’re watching right now, I can’t emphasize this enough: Do not let your kids go on hunting trips with the vice president. I don’t care what kind of lucrative contracts they’re trying to land, or energy regulations they’re trying to get lifted — it’s just not worth it.”
“Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” CBS
“He is a lawyer and he got shot in the face. But he’s a lawyer, he can use his other face. He’ll be all right.”
“You can understand why this lawyer fellow let his guard down, because if you’re out hunting with a politician, you think, ‘If I’m going to get it, it’s going to be in the back.’ “
“The big scandal apparently is that they didn’t release the news for 18 hours. I don’t think that’s a scandal at all. I’m quite pleased about that. Finally there’s a secret the vice president’s office can keep.”
“Apparently the reason they didn’t release the information right away is they said we had to get the facts right. That’s never stopped them in the past.”

Yeah, but she don’t count…she’s not one of “those” lawyers. Besides that, you have to say that. You’re married to her.
