MN DNR issues ’06 Fishing Reg Clarifications

    The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued the following clarifications for the 2006 Fishing Regulations handbook:

    – Using whole or parts of game fish, goldfish or carp for bait is unlawful in Minnesota. Goldfish are incorrectly included in the definition of minnows on page 4.

    – One walleye over 20 inches is allowed in a daily limit. More than one walleye over 20 inches is allowed in possession if the fish are caught on subsequent days. The information on page 5 is incorrect.

    Well, you have a few days yet!

    I download the pdf file from the DNR website for easy “searchable” access to the laws. I do keep the book in my boat though.

    YOU can’t have toooo many books, I keep one at work, one in car, one in boat, one at home, and a few extras to hand out to friends if they don’t have one yet. I always review the whole book each year, especially the changes, and Special Reg section. Jack..

    Not that I really care, but this could impact tournaments a bit.

    Is it still illegal to use perch eyes for ice fishing bait ? Somebody is still doing it. Saw a recent foto of a mess from Big Winnie on the ice…and four perch had black eye patches.

    Ted that hasn’t been legal in MN since I can remember!

    Can’t use perch ears either.

    Sorry I missed your post Dave…yes 2005 was one over 24″, ’06 it’s one over 20 inches.

    Mind you 20″ was a gift from our state legislature… In a conversaton with a high ranking enforcement officer I was speaking to on several issues, “there was no biological consideration given” for the new “trophy” reduction… but was instead simply passed without substantial DNR input.

    Sad to see laws passed just for the gipper… eventhough it appears often that MN simply wants us to catch less fish, the DNR works too hard to have laws based on emotion rather than science passed…
