Upgraded to a 75 Yamaha Thanks LaCannes

Just got my new Yamaha 75 4 stroke from Corey at LaCannes Marine and traded in my 50 Merc 4 stroke EFI tiller if anyone is looking for a motor – still has warranty and he priced it right. They were very fair and fast to work with.
Anyone have any break in tips and anything to watch out for besides deadheads in the spring.

    Turk,

What year was your Merc? Did you get a decent trade-in value? I’ve got a ’01 50 Merc 2 stroke tiller that I would love to trade someday on a 4 stroke or e-tech but doubt i’ll get much for it since everyone seems to be getting away from the old 2 stroke technology. Probably isn’t much demand for my motor.

Maybe I’m better off just getting a whole new rig

I have an 06 75 Yammy on my boat and love it. Just do what they tell ya and it will be fine. The thing starts like my truck on every turn of the key warm or cold.

On a serious note, have any of you running the newer Yamahas had anyissues with “making oil”?
I heard the other day that they are still having trouble getting the rings to seat properly and a few dealers are recommending after the break-in, taking the motor out for a hard run at WOT for at least 2 hours with no slacking off the throttle at anytime during that period.
Not trying to start any controvery and I didn’t intend to hyjack this thread. But I am wondering if this was still an issue with Yamahas.

They never told me anything about it. They said run it like you stole it or do the break in period.

Where in the world would you be able to run for two hours at WOT without slacking off the throttle?

I beleive they don`t recomend running synthetic oil in a new engine it seems it takes a longer time to seat the rings. If you don`t follow manufactures break in it can void your warranty.

With all the new electronics they know how fast and how hard the enginge has been run. There was some bashing on a few of the bass boards about manufactures not covering an engine, because they did not do the manufactures recomended breakin.

One mecahnic made a post on a blown power head the manufacturer would not cover. Had 13 hours on it and of that 13 hours only .8 was below wide open thottle. Take it for what it`s worth being on the internet who knows?

Might be a heads up. Common sense prevails.

Bucketmouth, I actually got it across the street from there at Zacho’s. Scott Carlson my salesman said they are their best motor besides the Honda….

Don’t laugh buddy. This is/was a problem Yamaha wouldn’t even admit to at first. Same deal with guys buying Merc 4 strokes with Yami power heads. At first it was thought it might be a bad batch of fuel pumps and some guys changed them out and it seemed the gas in the oil problem went away. For a while. But it was concluded that the rings weren’t seating properly and the only fix was to run at WOT for at least two hours with no let up to get and hold the engine to a certain temp. This was to be done after the initial break-in and a fresh oil change. The extra oil or gas in the oil would really show up after extended periods of trolling, idling, or operating in cold cold water, because the engine wasn’t getting hot enough to burn all the fuel and the extra would slip past the rings and end up in the crankcase.
I’m just wondering if it’s still an issue with the new 4 stroke engines.

Never mind. I just heard this is not a problem with the new motors.

I own a 03 Suzuki 75 horse efi. I had problems with the “making oil” phenomenon too. It did eventually correct itself. So it was a problem for not just one manufacturer.
