Has anyone fished in Cozumel? I’m going at the end of March and would like to try some fishing. I have no clue what to look for. Can anyone give me any reviews from their trips?

I don’t think there’s much of Cozumel open after the hurricane, I heard they still don’t have the pier rebuilt, I’ve seen them out deep sea fihing, and they bring in some large fish like yellowfin tuna and other I don’t know fish, have you ever seen them? sorry there just big fish

I haven’t fished out of there for a couple of years. The ‘cuda fishing was fantastic. The boats I’ve been on usually went for those.

Ralph, there isn’t any flatheads down there! But you might want to try for some sail cats! They fight like a channel of twice there size.

I was fishing down there two years ago. The cuda a mahi mahi fishing was excelent. We just went down to the docks and started talking with the boat owners after they came back from the morning outing. They usually come back in around 1-2. Take a look at what they caught, ask them their price, and barter from there.

Bring your sea sickness pills. They won’t go back in to drop you off!

Thanks, guys. Brian, I’ll trade a week of flattie fishing in March for a week in Mexico anytime!

I only went fishing one time in Cozumel. Caught a Barracuda. Went for 4 hours, got sick early into trip. I blamed it on the ride, (maybe it was the coronas the night b4?) Anyways, you should try it. On a side note, where are you staying ? We usually go there every February, have stayed at most places, and were told to take a year off, as they are wiped out. Were going to Puerta Vallarta instead , I love Cozumel, because I Scuba, and it has some of the best diving around.

Not sure if you can get a cheap flight from there to Mazatlan, but Mazatlan is close to El Salto, some of the best bass fishing in the world. I’ve been there with Ron Speed before, he has a nice camp there. Here’s more info if you’re interested. Mexico Bass Fishing

Ralph, have stayed there twice. Actually were there last February. One hint, In the morning, you can sign up for the dining area, where you order from the menu. They can only take reservations because it is only so big. Sign up everyday if you can. It is excellent food, they actually cooked my barracuda for us and it was tasty !!! Bring a pair of Khakis, as they have a dress code in there. Have fun !!!

Thanks for the tips, Big G! They re-opened from the storm about a week and a half ago, so I hope everything is in order by the time we go.

I’ll echo Big G’s comments. It’s a real nice place! Take a stroll north along the beach and once you clear the Melia resort, you can fish the surf too. I did every morning before the sun came up. I had a small ray break my line off on the 2nd cast. The snorkeling right in front of El is real good. Usually they feed the fish every day, which is real popular with the kids.

Have a Bahama Mama for me!
