Best River Walleye Rod

Okay, I finally got a boat last year and did a fair amount of fishing out of it. About half of my fishing was for walleye on the main channel of the Miss. I have tried various spinning rods and have failed to find anything I really like. I only fish the river and mainly fish below the lock and dams or near wing dams with jigs and floaters. What rod would you guys recommend? Here is the only catch – it has to be under $100 (with Shipping) since I still have a boat to pay for and a wife to keep
I would like the name of the rod, length and action.

    Thanks

Mr. Twister, I would look at 6 different rods. I would look at spinning rods between 6′ to 6’6″ in medium to medium light with an extra fast tip. I would recommend that you look at the St. Croix Premier, Shimano Clarus or Compre, Scheels Guide Series, or Fenwick HMX or HMG. Shimano, Scheels, and the Fenwick HMG have LIFETIME warranties. St. Croix Premier and the Fenwick HMX have 2 year and 5 year warranties respectfully. Any of these rods would do an excellent job. I like a 6 foot medium light with an extra fast tip for vertical jigging, but a 6’6″ medium light is a little better all-around rod. Hope this helps and GOOD LUCK Fishing!! 690reece

I think the gander mountain IM8 Pro Select series is great, and priced nicely at about $60. The 6’6″ medium action spinning rod is quite nice. I especially like it after adding a counter-balance weight on the back of the handle (normark makes a good slip-on rubber boot that holds weights). Put a 1000 or 1500 size reel on that rod with 8# sensation (the rod is a little too stiff for fireline) and you’ll have a great combo for pitching and vertical jigging, and it even throws cranks pretty well. Rod ($60), counter-balance weight kit ($10), a decent reel (I’d recommend a shimano sahara 1500, $60), and the line should cost about $140 total at full price and will give you a combo that you’ll be happy using for several years.

It would be pretty tough to pass on a Shimano Clarus for $60 in a 6’6″ medium action…….

I think that is the all around best rod on the market. Great sensitivity and over the counter replacement lifetime warranty……..

    Mr. Twister-

You really should take a look at Mike’s offering at HOF.

I also wanted to mention that St. Croix upped it’s warranty on it’s Premier series rods for 2006 to 5 years.

    St. Croix Warranty

I’m a big St. Croix fan. I’m almost certain Mike uses St. Croix blanks on his rods.

I will also go with the Gander IM8 rods. They are an excellent choice for the money impaired (me )
