What is a good rod for BIG Northern Pike? I am going on a Fly in trip to Canada in June, and need a couple of good rods.(at least that is what I told the wife) Please keep in mind that the Mrs. has me on a tight budget. Thanks

If a St. Croix is out of your budget, try looking at a Fig Rig rod. They have some bait casting models in the $90 range that should fill your needs. Their line includes a 6′ 10″ Hvy Power rod that should handle Pike nicely.

Mostly it depends on what lake you are going to…….If you are heading up to a lake that host multiple fish in the 20 to 30lb range, then go with a good MH 7′ musky rod, since you will be throwing bigger baits……

However, the majority of the northern Ontario fly-in trips host 100s of fish in the 5 to 10lb range, with a good shot at a couple of 40″ fish…….With a possible chance of a 45 IF YOU ARE LUCKY!!!!!!

With that said, a good 7′ MH fast action bait caster will serve you well in whatever type of rod manufacture you choose.

I also recommend using a superline to cut through the cabbage better.

Troy, shoot me a PM or email and I can turn you onto an incredible hot lure that will outperform all others up there!!!!!!

Fig Rigs are very nice rods, they have a very good range in their product line for any type of presentation. If you are interested in more info on them you can check them out at http://www.figrigrods.com or send me a PM.

I have a Gander Mountain 7′ MedHvy/fast, bait caster with a calcutta reel that works very nicely on big pike and muskies. The rod is not very expensive, 80ish I think.

    Have fun.
