I am looking into buying a new trolling motor for my 17′ Lund Angler. I have a Minn Kota 55AP now and would like to buy at least a 80lb thrust. Any suggestions on what brand and do I get the one with the sonar??

    Welcome aboard Driz

What types of fishing do you do? This may help with the answer. Do you fish the river?.

If you don’t fish the river, I would suspect 65 lbs would be enough. If you fish the river, you may want a 80 lb. Let some of the river guys comment on what they have.

If you like to have a sonar up front, then I would suggest the universal sonar trolling motor.

Again welcome and I’m sure others will chime in.

Mostly lake fishing, small ones around Chisago, Mille Lacs, Kabetogama, and Eagle Lake in Canada. I am always fighting the wind with my current motor and am getting sick of my fishing pals moaning about stayin on course. I do fish the river St. Croix once in awhile.

i’ve gota minnkota maxxum 101pro with universal sonar and its the sweetest trolling motor out there (in my opinion) If you don’t feel you need that much thrust or have room for a 3rd battery, I’d seriously look into the 80lb model

Driz, I have the same boat, a 1700 angler. I have a Minn Kota 80lb maxxium with universal sonar. I fish the river mainly, as far as the 80 lb it’s been great, when the waters high I can hold above wing dams. When I was shopping I couldn’t decide between the maxx or the AP, everyone I talked to said the maxx was a better choice for fishing heavy current, faster response and built better. It’s nice to not have wires ty-rapped down the shaft and hose clamps to hold the transducer on the trolling motor. Just my experiances, I hope your choices work out for you, as my have for me.

80 pounds should be okay but you can always go bigger. Universal sonar is nice if you plan to run a fishfinder on the bow. The autopilot feature is nice if you want to avoid fighting the wind so much.
