Recently I moved from MN to WI so I am in process of registering boat in WI now. I want to make sure I understand correctly the process to get this done. Any help is appreciated. My MN boat registration expired on 12-31-05. I was informed that WI boat registration goes from March to March, is for a period of 3 years, & to complete a boat registration & titling application. As I interpret the application,I need to pay registration fee but not any sales tax to state of WI since I paid MN sales tax to dealer I bought boat from in MN. However, since there is a lein on boat through a credit union I need to contact them to get signed Out of State title to mail with boat registration and titling application. After submitting all of this to state of WI I can still operate the boat as long as I have a copy of completed boat registration & titling application with me. My boat trailer doesn’t need to be registered in WI. Has anyone done this process recently? Am I correct about what needs to be done? Thanks guys.

Everything sounds correct to me. The only part I am unfamiliar with is the signing by the credit union. But as soon as you pay for your WI registration, you may operate the boat as long as you keep the receipt with you while operating the boat. It can take a few weeks for the DNR to get you your new registration numbers and new title. So you can be back on the water in no time

I always put paperwork in a ziplock bag, sometimes you don’t know how long it will take to get the numbers.Took 4 months once for me,and I sent them in,not the dealer.I have never been checked here in WI for registration proof.
