Does anyone have a best week and month of the year for catching a big trophy walleye at Redwing. I have a teenage son that I’m trying to get hooked on fishing instead of other things !!!

iv’e found ANYTIME is the best time to be fishing. Don’t set his sights too high, as they say the average Walleye fisherman, will catch and land a true trophy, about one every 13 seasons of fishing. good luck, just get him out, and he should become “hooked”.

January 2, 2006 at 7:33 pm #408403If that statistic is true, I have a few more seasons to go I still have not gotten a walleye over 3 pounds or 26″ Of cousre I have only been fishing for them since 1996 or so. Someday it is going to happen

The best chance for “big” walleyes is soon to be upon us! Actually though, if I had to pick a week, I’d either pick the first week in April or the first week in November. Truth be known, trophy walleyes can come at any time in Red Wing….it’s a great fishery with many nice fish, due to the fact that more and more people are practising catch-n-release. Take a picture of those big ones and keep the 15-20 inchers and we will all stand a chance to catch a “trophy” well into the future.
On a side-note, if your son just wants to catch some respectable fish for the pan, and some large ones too, the sauger are biting quite well in Red Wing as we speak!
Good Luck to your son, hope he catches one that keeps him fishing for a lifetime.

April.
January 2, 2006 at 8:39 pm #408415You might want to consider hiring one of the guides listed on this site. I have a 17 year old, we have spend exceptional days with Steve D and Dustin, but from reading other reports from others you cant go wrong with any of them.
I mention this as an option as I think you might want to start with quality fishing opportunities and learning from the best. My thinking is that if you really want to get your son hooked make sure he has the best tools to pursue fish, the trophies will come with it.
Any way to go a day on the water with your son is a step in the right direction. Mostly I think what we all want is good quality time together. Cant beat the water for that.
Good luck from a fellow owner of a tean!~
January 2, 2006 at 10:41 pm #408441Late March on in to the first couple weeks of April are a good bet to hook in to a big walleye. These fish are fat from the winter feed and full of spawn. I have caught 27″ and 28″ eye’s in this time frame that will weigh over 10lbs.
Someone said it best though. Pool 4 is capable of putting a trophy eye in the boat at any given time.
January 3, 2006 at 5:32 am #408530Yep, Dustin nailed what I was going to say for big fish times. I would also suggest a day out with Dustin or James if you are not real familiar with the whole river system. They really do take their time informing and teaching newer anglers to this great system.
We want reports and pictures.
Jack..January 3, 2006 at 5:42 am #408531The last week of March – first 10 days of April is usually the best for the biggest of the big walleyes.
Last year my biggest guide customer walleye at 13.3 Lbs was caught on 3/27/05 by Mark Stanley.
The year prior in 2004 the largest walleye a customer caught came on 4/06/04 and weighed in at 14.1 Lbs.
The latest I’ve caught a true HOG is the 15th of April. Back in 2000 my tournament partner and I landed a 12.45 Lb walleye in a Team Walleye tournament. Usually by that time all the biggest fish have spawned but the rare straggler does linger.
The “prime time” to target these monsters (do a little digging and cross-referencing through old reports and the patterns will become apparent) is when the water temps first hit the low 40’s in combination with the first increase in flow.
Hope that helps some. If you have any questions, just holler.

In the late 1980,s I caught three obver 10 lbs, all released. I figured I could always get another one but that hasn’t happened since, although my son did catch one slightly over 12 lbs in the Alma Pool a few years ago.

January 4, 2006 at 3:42 am #408946Here’s a 12-Lb 11-Oz. walleye boated while out fun fishing with Dustin Stewart two days after the Stanley hog.
A buddy of mine, Jim Bealieu, landed a pig identical to this one the day prior in a different location. Last year the last week in March was the prime time for the tank pre-spawners.
January 4, 2006 at 2:35 pm #409010On pool 2 spring high water is becoming one of my favorite times of the year to chase big fish. The timing on this seems to change a little each year depending on when we get the high water. It seems to run anywhere from the end of april to the middle part of june. Just depends on what the water levels are doing for that year.
Lots of nice walleyes to be caught during this period casting cranks and jigs to wingdams and shoreline breaks. Have not seen any yet the size of what James has posted. Most likely wont due to it being after the spawn but finding 26″ and bigger fish during this period is not to hard to do. Catching mid range fish from 24″ to 26″ is real common and dont be suprised if at the end of the day most of your catch was over the 20″ mark. Very easy to see why this is a favorite time of year for me.
