Paul Allen from KFAN, said this morning that when the Wilf’s fired Tice, they gave him the option of releasing the information on Monday. Giving him the opportunity to inform his coaches, and family himself. He told them to release the information right away. It wasn’t the Wilf’s decision to announce it yesterday. It was Tice’s. Why fire him right after the game? Why not wait a day? I guess I’ll answer that there isn’t a good time, and why keep the guy hanging any longer than he has been already.

Anyone who watched Tice on channel 5 last night can see that he was a class act.

Tice will be missed for his open access to the media policy and his honesty.

Maybe he was over his head, maybe he didn’t have the players. The one thing we can always say about Tice was he cared about the fans and trying to win games. Remember Denny? Would you rather have that egotistical clown or Tice?

I wish Mike Tice and his family the very best, he is a class act.

As the old saying goes: you can’t fire the team/work crew so the owner fires the head coach/manager. Not always fair but thats the way they do it I guess. I think people expected too much with McCombs the owner as he had money but he didn’t spend alot of money to build the team. And that is part of the problem bigtime with sports: who spends the most money has the best team it seems. The ”honor” of playing a professional sport has been replaced by how many millions will you pay me? Pay me a super salery or I won’t play for you. Don’t get me wrong as I like sports too but its come down to ”watching a bunch of millionaires playing a game.”I know we don’t like to look at that being a reality but its true. Gone are the days when alot of families can afford to take their families to a ball came, let alone just yourself, because it cost too much. Gone is the ”honor” of just being a professional ball player as now its just big bucks is what they care about. I guess I still have a bad taste in my mouth from back when professional baseball was cancelled a few years back because the players went on strike that year. What happened to the ”sport” of the sports? Sorry kids you can’t watch your favorite team play ball this year because they are on strike because they don’t make enough millions. Wheres the honor, glory, sportsmanship, and thrill of being one of a million guys who gets to be on the professional team? Sports are now spelled $$$$$$. Not fair to the sport nor the fans.
    Thanks, Bill

I agree totally agree. The fact that he went on last night was total class. He could have, and I think most people would have, blown it off. The guy who was doing the show with him, seemed a bit shaken and didn’t really have it together as much as Tice did.

Linehan left because Red wouldn’t pay him a portion of what he was worth.

He actually left because he didn’t know if Tice was going to be around for 2005 and Miami offered him a long term deal. He could have stayed for one more year but chose to leave.

I also do think Tice was thrown into this mess when Red figured him and Denny were no longer buddies and Denny could not handle Randy Moss. I think Red chose Tice because of his size and he was vocal and had a good relationship with the players. Red was looking for an intimidating type of coach to keep Randy at bay but we saw that didnt happen.

If nobody honestly believes Tice and his staff can win a superbowl, then theres no reason to keep him even for next year. Viking fans do not like 9-7 and will stop buying tickets to sit in that lame excuse for a stadium to watch them lose games. 9-7 or 8-8 is considered a failure in this city. We got some good guys coming back next year. And I think we proved the media wrong when they said Culpepper was facing different defensive schemes when Johnson was facing the same and went 6-2. Do people remember last year when Johnson went 1-5 for the Bucks before getting benched for the rest of the season and then cut.. Culpepper has many years left and is a pro bowl QB. Hes the starting QB, theres no reason to get rid of him..

I see and understand everyone’s points on this. We will “All” never agree on every point. That’s cool. Here is my take:
Personally, I liked Tice. But his coaching style went against the grain in the way “I” thought the team should have been run. (No, I am not an expert! And I am sure no one will be knocking on my door to coach! ) But a few things stick in my mind.

#1. If: Parcells, Dungy, Vermeil, Jimmy Johnson, or Holmgren, or Bud Grant was coaching the team this year, there would not have been a “Love Boat” or “Whizinator” scandal for us all to deal with. I believe their coaching styles instilled in these overpriced kid’s minds that that kind of thing on or off the field would not be tolerated. I think Tice never demanded that type of respect from his players. He was not “Feared” to a certain extent. I think a team needs a dose of that in a way.

#2. Take the Baltimore game for instance. Fourth and a couple, you are behind, and there are 2.5 minutes left in the game. You can show your offense you believe in them, and throw them out there for that play, and try to win the game standing up! Or you can throw your defense out there who obviously hadn’t been able to stop Boller during the 4th quarter, and let them try to win the game for you! Problem is, in my mind, defenses don’t score game winning points! It’s the end of the game! They have the lead, and a horse of a running back that will just run the ball down your throat, denying you the opportunity to get the ball back! Not to mention Belichek schooled him on clock usage! I think that was poor coaching! The year was full of this type of thing.

Say what you will, I think it was the wrong position for Tice to be in, and the wrong coach for Zygi and company to start with. He needs to come in and start his own regime, and not pick up where someone else failed. Jim Fassel will probably be the next Vikings coach.

Anyone taking any bets on that?
Should be an interesting off season for the Vikes and Packers!

Unless they can get Riviera first, if not, Tressel is the guy

Zygi does have one interview today. That is with Eagles Vice Pres of personal Tom Heckett. He would probably be hired as a GM. Rob Presziski was given a multi-deal contract this morning and he and Tom worked together for 5 seasons in Miami in the early 90’s.

Fassel would be a big mistake!

Zygi needs to hire a G.M. first, and let him handle the hiring of the coach. Remember, the Wilf’s are rookie owners, as evidenced by how they handled the firing, they need to have a qualified G.M. handle the coach screening and hiring, or this could end up looking like the Dan Snyder organization in its early years.

If they hire Heckett as expected from Philly, then I’d have to bet on Bill Childress (Eagles OC) to be our next HC.

I agree, I think Zygi will let the new GM handle that one.. He was quoted a few weeks ago as saying he wanted a GM with lots of NFL experience.

How about the Bears game? Did it look like we came out to play? You gotta give alot of credit to FOX field annalist Tony Saragosa. Everygame this year on FOX, this guy has done one heck uva job. Here is some of his analytical game quotes from yesterdays Viking- Bears game.

“well from down here on the field, it looks like the Vikings are leading the Bears in points. That means the Vikings are winning.”

    “where are the bathrooms?”

“i just talked to Kyle Orton and indeed his beard is fake”

“God the Metrodome has the best Nachos.”

“you guys in the booth need another beer?”

“ok, i’m going to wonder to the other end of the field now”

” Be right back guys, I just crapped my Zubaz”

” Security said I was stalking the cheerleaders, why does happen at every game?”

” The Bears are making themselves better by playing the reserve players, this means they will have to step it up in the future”

    ” its only halftime?”

” God I cant believe I’m getting paid for this” what? My mic is on?”

The ESPN NFL crew believe Jim Fassel will end up as head coach in Oakland, as he worked there in the past and is a favorite of owner Al Davis. That is fine by me, as I don’t want the Vikings to hire a washed-up retread like Fassel. The high point of his coaching tenure with the Giants was beating Denny Green in the NFC championship game, and you don’t have to be a coaching genius to beat Denny in a high-stakes game.

Brian Billick was given another year with the Ravens, so we will be spared having him come in as Vikings head coach. I am not a Billick fan, as I have seen none of his “offensive genius” in Baltimore, and his Super Bowl victory there was earned by the Ray Lewis-led/Marvin Lewis-coached defense that was in place when he got there.

I am a little concerned that fired Rams coach Mike Martz might be considered for the Minnesota job, although I haven’t heard him mentioned. He reminds me way too much of Denny Green, in that Martz can run an offense with the best of them, but cannot handle game-time coaching decisions.

I heard that Brad Childress (Eagles OC) is supposed to come in for an interveiw today, and also that Scott Linehan is considered a possibility. I don’t like the idea of Linehan too much, or Cottrel either for that sake.

I dont like Cotrell either. Keep him on defense is fine but not a head coach. Also the guy from Denver is suppose to come in too..

From a Pack Fan there is no way on earth they would hire Mike Tice. Unfortunately, aside from Lombardi, Holmgren and Sherman, I suspect whomever the Pack decides on it will be a disaster. Bob Harlen is set to retire and their new GM’s only claim to fame is he managed to loss two All-Pro guards last year.

Considering all the injuries the firing was a hugh mistake.
