My wife is asking for a keyless lock system to be installed on her car. I am looking a putting a combination remote starter / keyless entry system in, but have heard a lot of bad things about them once they were installed. Has anyone had success with theirs or recommends one brand over another? Thanks. Ted

the only way to go with that stuff is to go expensive and get it done right….

About 50% work and the others..well..lets just say its like having ghosts. I have seen remote starts that start on there own, lock on there own, start for 10 seconds then quit, or don’t work at all. My wifes old GrandAm had a remote and it worked fine. I think newer models with engine ignition checks on keys have lots to do with the units not working to well.

Ted: I’ve got a Viper system on my Suburban. Security and remote start. Works beautiful. Dealer in Winona. Check out Viper web site. Viper

It is in all who puts it in, I installed them for years and seen some bad installs, make sure they solder all wires and get power from right at the battery and fuse it. Viper-DEI, Clifford are good stay away from crimestopers.

I have a viper remote starter. I think it was fiarly cheap with installation. it is only the starter and was a gift. I think it was right around $250 installed. Bought at Best buy in Cedar Rapids Iowa. This post is ironic though. This morning I had my Durango running and when I got out to leave it was idling at around 2500rpms!!!! I was thinking WTF. I called the Dodge dealership and they told me that I probably have a sensor going out. And that it was probably nothing to do with my remote starter.

Depends on what your definition of success is. If you define it as wrecking a perfectly good car, than yes I have had success, and I did the expensive, and had it done “right” Don’t do it!

Had one put on my Suburban when I bought it new, works like a charm. I have no idea what brand it is, but the dealer said it was the best one out there???? Works great, warm car in the winter is nice. As the others have said, get the best, and have it professionally installed.

Thanks for all of your responses. I might just go with the keyless entry. Have any of you heard if that has had the same problem as the starters? Ted

I had an after market remote starter put in my last truck. I liked the fact that I could push a button and lock/unlock my truck, start/shut off the engine, and if needed, push a button and the horn would go off so I could find my truck

There was only one problem with it though, when they installed it, they wired it in in such a way that the the heater and fan would not come on till you put the key in the ignition. So I’d end up running out to the truck after all.

bigcrappie is right on the mark. I have had $35.00 ones and $150.00 ones and they all worked great because they were installed correctly.

I work at a GM dealership and I wouldn’t do that with a 01 and newer GM vehicle, the computer is linked to just about everything and if it can be screwed up it will.
