Been up in the tree almost every day since Oct. 10 to get a better view of grass passing thru pool 9. Let several bucks pass, waiting for the big un with a bow or opening day of the gun season. Had seven bucks under the stand three days before gun season.
Over the past 20 years of gun hunting at my brother-in-laws place there has only been once that I didn’t tag a decent buck after a couple days in the tree….2005 marks the 2nd time this has happened, and I don’t know why.
Opening day I saw 28 does and one six pointer. The second day I saw 29 does and a little fork horn. The third day I saw seven does and the same little fork horn again.
Returning home, my neighbor called and said he shot a nice 10 pointer, 18 inch inside spread along our common fence on opening day of gun season. Could have launched an arrow at that deer TWICE, but won’t take shots over 30 yds and the closest he got was 40, standing broadside in a hayfield.
After 30 days of deer hunting and only filling two doe tags cause friends wanted venison it is getting tougher to maintain outside the ears standards for bucks and I almost would consider shooting a doe…because, honestly, I feel the urge to KILL something.
But then the does come in, totally clueless, and I tell myself there are two more gun seasons in Illinois, the bow season runs until January, and gun season in Wisconsin does too. So I let them walk.
Then that evening or the next morning, I’m back in the woods again and the little voice of Skippy, my evil twin, whispers “C’mon…dontcha wanna kill something ? Tenderloins on the grill for lunch!
The wind is now blowing out of the NW at 25-30. Not exactly ideal for deer hunting in the stand behind the house.
So here I am, logged on to IDA just like you are. Sitting at a keyboard rather than out there in the natural world.
That outside the ears buck will never knock on the door and stick around until I can load the gun or grab the bow. I must go out there in the woods and try to find him.
We all have demons and manitous. Mine are 150 inch or bigger bucks and walleyes over 10.
It would probably be easier just to slide into a steady downward spiral of booze and pills. Skippy would like that.
This can’t happen. God’s gifts have been too generous. Being born an American. Being reasonably healthy. Paying all the bills on time. Great wife. Great kids. And able to just go out and hunt or fish everyday.
Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving? How can we begin to give thanks? Maybe by picking up that bow and heading out to the woods…just because we can.
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all. Some of us have it better than others…but we all have it pretty darn good!!!

Is a manitou one of those things that swim in the Florida rivers that people hit with their boats?

Does? Let’s see I just had 7 walk by the back door, ate all of the bird feed. The funny thing is you’d have to shoot all 7 to have enough for a meal. I can’t believe how small the deer are this year and rarely a bone to be seen. Got one nice 170 incher that has gone nocturnal but I hope he loses his mind over a hot to trot doe during the second rut. Couple things that pissd me off is reading about all the infractions in MN for baiting deer. My opinion is WHO CARES! Instead of creating more laws on what you CANNOT do to kill more deer, how about creating some that make it easier. I’m sure the $2 billion auto body industry wouldn’t be too happy but who cares. They taste great and are fun to pursue. Also why in the heck can’t an all season licensed hunter hunt during the 3B season? Will they obliterate the population and we’ll have no deer next year? Makes little to no sense to me but I’m sure there are brain surgeons out there that have list upon list of reasoning to support their cause. Ok I’ll get off my soap box. The venison is ready…….. Happy Thanksgiving!

That is a good question kurt I have often wonderd that myself. I just might have to send an email to Lou Cornicelli and find out the answer.

The situation is just as bad–or worse–in Wisconsin. As we cheeseheads enter the 5th year of the CWD “crisis” I have several thoughts….
** Why does the DNR continue to “test” for CWD. They know it’s here! If you’re walking thru a minefield and one of the troops steps on a mine, seems to me any further stumbling would be a waste of resources.
** Amen to what was said about the auto repair and insurance industries. I believe THIS was the driving force behind all the CWD smoke and mirror whack-a-thon limits on whitetails in the first place.
** Deer hunting used to be almost SACRED in Wisconsin. Nine days when everything else went on hold. With the whack-a-thon mentality and season running until next year this is no longer the case..in many deer management units.
** In other DMU’s up north which used to attract beaucoup hunters to the annual deer camp revenues at bars, restaurants, etc have fallen off considerably. Do you suppose the whack-a-thon in downstate DMU’s is an attempt to get folks to return to the northern counties again?
** Why does the Wisconsin DNR enlist DNR “sharpshooters” which are paid a bonus above their regular wage for shooting the deer? And why did the DNR pay to mount one nice buck in velvet for one of the sharpshooters? bucks? I thought they were supposed to shoot does!!

All the shoot from the hip mentality regarding deer management in both Wisconsin and Minnesota reveals that it is possible to shoot an entire clip into your foot, reload and shoot the other foot…then smile and tell the world you’re doing the right thing.
Went out last evening and saw no deer. Gotta stick with it–there are only 40 days left in the season!

Hey Ted stick with it, eigther way, if you see a nice shooter or you don’t, you’ll be glad when you can say you went the length till the close, you just might see that once in a season nice one.

Last nite got out to the ground blind about 3;40. Lite snow falling. Wasn’t in the blind 10 minutes and a basket six with a BIG eight following started working across the hayfield. Disappeared behind big clump of brush along edge of field and I got ready! After about five minutes it became clear they weren’t coming my way. Peaked out the corner of my ground blind hoping maybe they snuck in around the fenceline. Nope. But two big does were right there. Needed one so launched arrow at 30 yds. Heart shot. Deer ran about 40 yds. before piling up. Had tenderloins for lunch. Looked out the window while eating and watched the same basket 6 with that heavy 8 behind it vectoring essentially down the same trail as last night. went out and hung a treestand this morning….if the wind is right…who knows.
