November 17, 2005 at 2:07 am #397274This is a really good post guys. Firefighting is the career that I really want to get in to. I’ll graduate college in May, and will be looking for openings after that.
It would be a real big help to me if some of you would pm me or email me with some tips for getting onto a department or other things that I should do before applying. Thanks guys.
My family has about 130 years combined experience between 4 people on my hometown volunteer department along with my uncle who retired this summer from the Waterloo department with 31 years experience.
For everyone who has served
November 17, 2005 at 7:46 am #397314i am a fire captain with the minneapolis fire department. i will start my 13th year in feb. i work on the 3rd or 4th most busy rigs in the city. the city as a whole this year is almost up to 30,000 runs for the year. the rig that i am assigned to will respond on about 3500 runs and i will go on 1/3 of those runs. being this is the big city we get called out on everything from someone who is having trouble breathing to car wrecks to shootings, stabbings and everything inbetween. oh ya we also respond to fires of all types. iam on engine 14, and as far as i know we have laid the most hose of all 19 engine company’s this year. we have 3 shifts, A and B shift work a day, off a day, work a day, then off for 3. i am on the C shift and we work 2 days in a row then off for 4 days in a row. thats why i live 100 miles north, up on mille lacs lake. if anybody is intrested, it sounds like they are putting a entrence test together soon. here in minneapolis, you don’t need any training to apply, they give you all the training you need, both EMT and firefighter. when there is info available, i will post it……tom fellegy Captain E14 C-shift MFD
November 17, 2005 at 10:31 am #397316In December I will have served 20 years as a volunteer in our town. Its time to retire and let the younguns take over. With funding and small town population becoming a very serious issue , I think it will only be a matter of time and volunteer departments will have to combine and merge to keep enough guys with enough good equipment.

My Grandfather served several years in Van Horne IA. My Father served 32 years in Dysart. My Brother has fifteen years with the Clive Fire Dept., and my son served as a junior firefighter 2 years before leaving for school/National Guard. The Iowa fire service has always been a large part of our family!November 17, 2005 at 3:10 pm #397374very cool to see so many giving their time and efforts towards their communities there is so much training, paper work, politics, and red tape anymore that it really takes a devotion, hey nk, what do you use your helmet for
