I read an article in the Catfish In-Sider 2003 Guide about using a fishing journal to improve fishing success. Since I am now an old retired guy I thought it might be interesting to start keeping track of my fishing trips. I used the angling journal in the article as kind of a template and designed a form in Microsoft Word to use as a journal. I want to computerize the journal so I can e-mail it around to my friends and because I am just one of your basic anal babies. I designed the form with form fillers for each section so that I can just tab through it as I post it on the computer. I even went so far as to develop drop down menus for some of the information I want to capture. I plan on carrying a notebook in the boat or in the fish house and just jotting down the information and then in the evening posting the journal on the computer. I thought I would offer my journal to the Fish the River crew. I tried to do a post with the word document as an attachment. It would not accept the attachment unless it has an extension of .txt, .zip, .jpg, .png. Is there a way to do this post and attach a word document with a .doc extension?

All electrons present and accounted for!

Here’s a brief explaination of the two logging system Comanchero15 sent out to us. In his own words…”Attached are the automated Fishing Journal and Fishing Log that I started to use. I have been using these for about a month and it only takes me a few minutes to post the information and save it. The journal is made using Microsoft Word – you can tab from item to item and they are all form filled spaces and the Species and Bait Used columns are pull down menus. To adapt the pull down menus just use the Forms toolbar and unlock the document and make your changes. I attached a copy of one of my daily journals so you could see it in action. The Fishing Log is done in excel and is fairly straight forward. Let me know if I can provide any other help with this. Go ahead and share this with anybody interested.”

Here’s the word doc version, followed by a sample journal entry from 12.27.02

And last we have a more “automatic” version of the same journaling system, done in Excel. Some of you may not have Excel so this file may not display for you.

Thanks for sharing these with us Comanchero15. I’m sure it will get the wheel spinning for some people and get them logging their valuable fishing info from each day on the water.

Thanks bud! I down loaded the excel version. Had a little trouble getting it to total, but with a little help from my son..it works great! This will be fun to look back at. Do you put things like temperture, sunning or cloudy, etc. in the comments section?
