Looking to get a new pup this year and was wondering if anyone currently has a SS. If so, how are they around young children, strangers etc… Any feedback would be appreciated. Also, anyone on the site sell SS’s.

    Thanks

springers are excellent dogs with kids, they will lick your kids until you tell them to stop, plus very good pointers.

I have a springer thats 5-6 yrs. This dog is great with kids. Mine are grown up and gone but next door there are 5.
I hunt with mine, great nose. The best thing is its a nice size dog to have in the house. This is my second springer. You’ll love them. Good Luck Jim

Have a 2 1/2 year old female SS. Hate to rain on the parade. Ours does NOT trust anyone except us and that includes little children and strangers. We have to keep an eye on her when both are around. She has snapped at both, fortunately without causing physical harm. In most cases we cannot trust her. Too bad because these are the most loving dogs to those that she knows. Vet calls it fear aggression, we call it dominace aggression. This Springer is a wierd space cadet. She will bark and growl at me in the field if she has not seen me for 3 minutes (working heavy cover). Sniffs me and decides that things are OK. Fantastic nose and the best hunter you will EVER find. Ours is a 40 lb female and fits in nicely to our house. Shedding is an issue.

You might want to have her eyes checked if you haven’t
already.Dogs with bad eyes don’t trust anyone who dosen’t smell familiar.

I just got a new SS pup and have a 6 year old. Both boys. My first one was a female. Very reserved and bit me twice. She was very dominate but loved everyone. Have not had any problems with my 6 year old. Very loyal breed and have some of the best noses in the business.

THIS MY SECOND SPRINGER, SHE IS 8YRS OLD AND HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL DOG, A LITTLE TESTY SOMETIMES AND A LITTLE HARD HEADED SOMETIMES (WIFE SPOILS THE SH**T OUT OF HER) HASN’T BEEN AROUND (SMALL) KIDS MUCH, GROWLS A LITTLE BUT I THINK IT’S HARMLESS. SMARTER THAN MOST PEOPLE I KNOW, CAN TRAIN TO DO ANYTHING, GREAT HOUSE DOG, MY FIRST SPRINGER WAS BETTER THAN THIS ONE, I THINK BETTER BLOOD LINES.

CHECK OUT THE BLOODLINE VERY WELL, GO CHECK OUT THE PARENTS THIS WILL GIVE YOU A GOOD IDEA WHAT TYPE OF SPRINGER YOU WILL GET EITHER THE WHINY,BARKER TYPE OR THE QUIET TYPE, THEY NEED ALOT OF ATTENTION NOT A DOG TO PUT ON A LEASH IN THE BACKYARD, NEEDS TO BE A FAMILY MEMBER.

AS FOR THE SHEADING PROBLEM MENTIONED IN A PREVIOUS POST, WE KEEP HER FIELD CLIPPED (ABOUT 3 TIMES A YR) NO NOTICEABLE SHEADING PROBLEM.

i have a 7 year old male and probably will never own another kind of dog. great with our 2 kids 11&7 and is a regular member of the family. he has a great nose and hunting attitude, he obeys well now however as a pup he did have a mind of his own. one hit from the dog collar however taught him who is master. they do need to be trimmed 3-4 times a year and you had better be in good shape yourself because when a springer gets on a bird he wont give up until it flies, if the bird runs, you’re gonna run if you want a shot.

I agree on how the dogs will not give up on finding a bird!!
I have a 2 year old male and this year was his first year hunting(I know I know should have taken him last year!) As soon as he jumped his first bird he was dedicated to find another one! He’s great with kids Even lets them try and ride him like a horse My parents had 2 one lasted 15 years and the other one is 8 years now. Both great dogs, always considered a member of the family never as “that thing I take hunting”

    You will not be dissapointed

18fisher, Out of ten birds your dog got up about half, but if you really want a dog devoted to the hunt and passionate about it you should get a lab.

5 out of 10 for his first year? I would say his future looks great.

    Welcome to IDA Joe!!!

I do not how old you are but I am willing to bet you are younger than me, when you get to be my age you will want a pointer and not a flusher that way you do not have to try and keep up with the dog.

Ditto on the Lab. Without elaborating on the SS dogs why take a chance. Some are apparently great, but some are not; why take that chance on a dog you will have for a decade or more.

So 2Fishy4U are you saying all Labs are great? Hope not cause my brother spent $600 on his yellow lab and another $2500 for training yet my 6 year old springer smoked his [censored] at Game Fair and I bought him for $50

Labs are best for waterfowl. Springers are best for upland

I can’t argue with your comments, especially when it comes to hunting. I just think on balance labs might be better bet.

One other question. Why would your brother spend $2,500 for training a lab. I am approaching 60 years old, but even I can train a dog myself and labs are easy.

Sounds like you just don’t like labs.

Grew up with one and now i am a proud owner. Both are good with kids and they are easy to train. Start when they are young and get them around different people and children. If you keep them away that leads to trouble.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU DON’T LIKE SPRINGERS, THIS IS MY SECOND SPRINGER AND YOU CAN TRAIN THEM TO DO ANYTHING, LIKE I SAID IN A PREVIOUS POST THEY ARE SMARTER THAN MOST PEOPLE I KNOW, I LIKE LABS ALSO BUT A SPRINGER IS A VERY GOOD ALL AROUND DOG, AND WHAT I MEAN BY ALL AROUND, IS ALL HUNTING AND FAMILY STUFF.
