Hi, I’m going camping in Frontenac State Park and I know theres trout streams down there. I have very little experience fishing for trout but i’ve walked streams fishing for smallies. Any suggestions?

If you are planning to go this weekend, you may be disappointed. I was in the SE area yesterday and today.
The soaking rain yesterday turned most of the streams into mud runs. If you have time to do some driving, you may find one of the spring fed streams that do not see substantial runoff. the further upstream you go, the cleaner things will get. check the MN DNR web site. They accually have very good information on streams and accessibility.
Good luck, that is a beautiful area.

Also try contacting the guys over at Bentleys, in Bloomington. Speak with Andy Roth, he lives in Prescott and is very well connected.
Unfortunately our St. Paul fly shop (Summit Fly Fishing on Grand Ave.) is now history.

The last day of trout season (currently catch and release only) is tomorrow.

    Good Fishing,

I was out this afternoon. The Root is high, but not unfishable, especially the further upstream you get on it. The feeders are all very fishable with a bit elevated levels, but they fished very well .

I’d give you more of an in-depth report, but the season cloases after tomorrow. The Metro fly shops are very nice, but they don’t necessarily always have up to date stream conditions for southeast MN. I, on the other hand……

Good luck if you get out,
    D.A.
