My wife has informed me that she woudl rather have a pontoon boat than the 16′ v mirro-craft. Should I trade? Can a pontoon be set up to troll, back troll, and jig for eye’s effectively?

Wife wants a pontoon boat

YES…I have a buddy that I fish with for Muskies and we fish off his pontoon all the time on Forest Lake. He has a minnkota powerdrive on the front, a couple of lowerance units on it. It is very comfortable to fish off the pontoon, and his wife goes out on the lake a lot more now then she did when he just had the boat, I don’t know if that is a good thing or not I am sure that this set up for EYES would be great too. Drifting, just use a drift sock, trolling should be no problem with a good 4-stroke, jiggin and bobber fishing you would have the most comfortable walleye boat made, put the grill on there and you will never have to leave the lake.
September 23, 2005 at 11:43 pm #385737I am sure your priorities are a tad different than mine so this might not be an option…but if my wife suggested that I trade in my fishing boat for a pontoon I’d be looking for a NEW WIFE! Seriously!
Is that a whip cracking I hear in your background?
September 24, 2005 at 12:09 am #385739Pontoons, due to nature of design, rock back and forth at even the littlest of wake…I don’t think you’d like it too much.
p.s. I saw a pontoon up in Wabasha with a 250 on the back… ….If you do go with one, I’d think of going big
September 24, 2005 at 12:12 am #385740Why not look at a deck boat instead, they have as much room as a pontoon but are more stabil, we have even taken them out in the gulf fishing!

Ranger maybe?
September 24, 2005 at 12:19 am #385742Now, I would own this pontoon… 81 MPH!
This thing has twin Merc 300X Pro Max’s on it!!!
600 HP…Can I get a heel yeah?!!!September 24, 2005 at 1:23 am #385749Deck boat may be the perfect compromise.
As for the whip cracking. You obviously don;t know me very well. I divorced the first wife because she bee otched too much about my fishing. This one is 15 years younger than me and doesn’t mind my outdoor activities. Just wants to find ways she can enjoy them more also. (If I get the deck boat I can get it rigged with one of them laptop looking gps/fishfinders!) Slop, you figure I should go with a single 300 or twin 250’s?September 24, 2005 at 1:46 am #385752It’s always a good thing to find a significant other which allows us to do what we love. Although, the age of a woman has nothing to do with it. My mom (57) loves fast bass boats and sets the hook on a bass like Kevin Van Dam !
A deck boat with a 250 might be the happy medium that allows you to enjoy the outdoors together.

September 24, 2005 at 5:57 am #385766Yup they beat me to it, deck boats I think are pretty darn nice, there is one out there I’m not sure who makes it but it’s the tahoe model, I see one around my area pretty often, but I thought it was about the perfect deck boat.
September 24, 2005 at 11:43 am #385774This may be the one.
http://www.loweboats.com/suncruiser/tahiti/Hope I can find a dealer that will put something on it other than one of them Black motors, like maybe a e-tech or possibly a yammie 4-stroker
September 24, 2005 at 1:16 pm #385778I think you should first ask her WHY she wants a pontoon? A deck boat might be nice BUT!!!!!!
jldiiPosts: 2294September 24, 2005 at 1:32 pm #385779For me personally, those are not my style of boats, but if I were to have to get one, I would want any top thats on it to be detachable, or at least fold down completely so as not to be in the way when setting hooks, or clearing lines when trolling, etc.
BTW, have you decided if you are going to get the optional bathroom enclosuer with the porta potty!
September 24, 2005 at 7:07 pm #385795Actually I was refering to these boats http://www.tahoesportboats.com/segment/index.cfm?fuseaction=segment.list&nav=20
But that looks like a fine choice too.September 25, 2005 at 1:44 am #385816Quote:

Smittys Marine in Lake City is a Lowe dealer. The jon boat I got through him is a Lowe. He carries Evinrude and Johnson motors. 1-651-345-3990. Ask for Ken or Ron.
Thanks, BillSeptember 26, 2005 at 3:10 pm #385964Your wife’s interest in boating can be a very good thing. I would definitely NOT rush out and trade the fishing boat for a pontoon boat. Maybe you can do some chatting with her about what she thinks would be great about having a pontoon boat. Maybe suggest going to the boat shows to look at and price new pontoon boats. If she is really more interested in boating than in fishing, you may want to consider a pontoon boat for her. Pontoon boats are a little tougher to trailer and launch than what you now have, but it might be best to AVOID pointing out any negatives to a pontoon boat.
There is really no question that a Walleye boat works best for walleye fishing. I would strongly urge you to keep your fishing boat if you end up getting a pontoon boat.
Maybe when you take her to the boat shows she will fall in love with a shiny new multi-species boat that you would love to have…
Good luck!
September 26, 2005 at 8:03 pm #386021I would think a pontoon would be a drag to trailer all the time. (no pun intented) I have one but it stays in the water. Fun to fish out of but tough in the wind. I rigged it with a bow mount trolling motor and graph. My wife loves to read and relax while I fish. I still have my other boat for all other water.
