I am looking to get out for a weekend trip next weekend. I wish I could put it off a week or two, but other commitments make this the only option. My problem, a weekend free to fish, not sure where to go. Located in North Central Iowa, willing to drive 4-5 hours if necessary. Thought about the Mississippi river, never been, had some guys tell me it would be a bad idea to go without someone that knows the water. Alexandria? even S.D. any input would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

The Waubay area in SD is pretty good. There are several lakes within 20 minutes of Webster, SD. We have fished for Crappies, Bluegills, Walleyes, Perch, Smallies, Northerns. Basically everything, so I dont know what you are fishing for, but this is a good area, however it is probably pushing your distance. From Central Iowa here, it is about 6-7 hours.

If you’ve never been to the mississippi you should go, The back waters are producing nice catches of panfish. Ive herd the whitbass are starting to go and thats what im after a week from now. The water is cooling down so the fish aren’t lathargic and are starting to feed pretty good and will until iceup. The next two and a half months are going to be good forsure and its only getting started. The scenery is beautiful along the miss and with all the waterfowl, animals and everything its got alot for a person too see.

If you’re looking for a decent walleye and perch bite, consider trying Ottertail Lake, about 50 miles NW of Alexandria. Let me know if you want some info on the area.
