You have to change the vaccume cleaner bag each time you vac – wrap it up and take it out side.
September 11, 2005 at 11:44 pm #383236I think I heard something about Lavender oil???? It was on T.V. thins morning. They were actually talking about keeping the fleas off the dog though, But it might work in the house????? Good Luck!
September 11, 2005 at 11:49 pm #383238I heard some where that when you vaccume up box elder bugs to also vaccume up some baking soda to kill the bugs, that might work for fleas as well.
jigginPosts: 54September 12, 2005 at 1:14 am #383264Happened to me along time ago. Washed down the animals with flea shampoo, bomded the house, washed everything(tons of laundry). Worked for a little while, then they came back. Called the vet and they said you have to kill the eggs too. Evidently the cans of spray I had only killed the adult fleas and not the eggs. I would think that now there is something that would kill the eggs too.
Well, we all had to leave the house again and rebomb. The second time around it worked. A real pain in more ways than one. Good luck, and don’t be afraid to call a vet. They can probably tell you the best way out.September 12, 2005 at 1:17 am #383265Im sure that this time of year is the worst for fleas. They’ve had time to reproduce and theres more around to get on the local wildlife like squirells, rabbits. etc. Rabbits have the reputation of having fleas by the dozens on them this time of year. If theres quite a few rabbits around your place they carry alot of them. We wait until the first realy heavy frost or two to hunt rabbits so the cold will kill some of them and even then thier all over the rabbits when we clean them. We’ve learned after trial and error while hunting them that to keep our dogs as free of them as we can and the house relatively free is we used a solution from k’mart and mixed it up in a weed sprayer and sprayed the carpets in the house and all the yard. This got rid of the fleas in our house and around the yard too. Bombs are ok but we had alot of fleas with our hunting and the dogs stayed in the house with us and brought in more. So when we treated the carpets, it didn’t hurt them or discolor them, it left enough residue to kill the strays that made it inside because of the cold weather and cool nights coming. They head for warm weather, the house, when it starts to get cool at nights. It sounds like the same problems we had and by spraying the yard and the house then giving the dogs flea baths occasionally it got rid of them and killed any strays that made it inside. We’ve tried alot of diffrent flea collars over the years and i’ve never found a good one that lasted even a month. The best way to keep fleas off of dogs for me is to wash them in a good flea shampoo then spray them down, this protected my dogs even while hunting, they got a few on them but they didn’t constantly scratch. The flea spray on the yard and carpet, under the couch cushions etc. worked for us.

September 12, 2005 at 1:11 pm #383338I consider myself an expert on flea extermination.
If you have a dog (my area of expertise) and they go outside or are in contact with other doggies…you will have fleas…at least ON your pups at some point.
Here’s a few things that worked for us.
Yard:
Move bird feeders that attract squirrils and rabbits to an area your dog can’t get to.Gardening depts have granuals for lawn pest. You’ll need enough for a minimum of two applications in the areas your dogs run. Space them no more than 10 days apart.
House:
Bombs work well for fleas. Make sure you wipe down/wash all areas that you use for preparing food after bombing…read the precautions on the label of the bomb. You will need to bomb your house a minimum of twice, once when you treat your lawn and again 14 days after the lawn treatment.
The same time you are bombing your house, machine wash any pillow covers, your bed linen if your dog sleeps with you with a small amount of bleach. Don’t make your reds turn white…a very small amount will take care of the critters and the eggs.
Very important to change the bags and spray your vacuum.
Have a can of flea spray for the vacuum and “spot” spraying.
Your flea magnet:
Flea Dip you pups in a bathtub or other container preferable white in color. This allows you to see if any fleas are coming off your best friend as they will float once dead. Most flea dips aren’t good for your dogs coat/skin, but you have to do it at least twice. Once when you treat your lawn and again 14 days later. If no fleas come off the second time, I would hold off on a third dip.
Remember to start at the dogs head and work down with the dip…otherwise they will run to your dogs schnoz and ears and the dip becomes a waste of time.
Watch for eggs on the inside of Rovers back legs…towards the croch/anal area. They are slightly smaller than the head of a pin and dark in color. They hatch 14 days after being layed. (which is the reason for the second 10/14 day treatments)Couple other things that help…
Walk around your house wearing white socks. This will allow a flea to stand out against the white sock. This will give you an idea of your sucess. (ps don’t walk around with JUST white socks on…)
If you notice unexplained itching around your ankles and small bumps in the same area…these are flea bites. Although they don’t care to live or lay eggs on humans…the don’t mind getting some blood from us for their egg production. The biggest key to the above is timing. Cover the inside, outside and your dog…one right after the other. You won’t kill all the eggs, you can count on that. Make the second application in 14 days, just after they hatch and before they can lay more eggs.
Fleas are easy to kill…it’s the eggs that are hard to destroy.
Hope this helps…
Good Luck!
September 12, 2005 at 1:36 pm #383349Not quite clear on what you are saying…Can you bring your white socks over, and make a few trips around my house? I have lots of itching rabbits around here.
September 12, 2005 at 1:41 pm #383352Have you been play cards with Putz?!
I was expecting him to jump in and drop a load of Lutefisk off…not you!
September 12, 2005 at 3:16 pm #383399You got it, Brian. I’ve been eating lutey most of my life and never have had a real bad case of fleas.
