Gary sent me a pm today he had noticed that I use to have a 1967 Plymouth Belvedere, he saw this in my reply to the post Holy Gas!! it reminded him of a buddy of his that had a 67 drag car with a 440 Mag. Mine only had a 318 but it was a sweet ride and my first car. So here ya go Gary heres the pic.

No pics, but my first ride was a 69 Buick LeSaber. Traded a electric guitar for it. The Guitar was worth about $75 at that time, 1979.

About 4-5 years later I did own a 72 Dodge Duster with a 440 in it. Smoked a set of tires about every 3-4 weeks…. Man, the crap we got away with back then.

My first was a 70 Buick GS. with a 455 Stage 1 in it. I could not imagine how much it would cost me to run that car now.

First car was a 1968 Buick LeSabre. 350 2 barrel. One windshield wiper, on the passenger side of course. Over heated every 20 mile so the backseat was full of water jugs. Way out of alignment so it pulled hard to the left. The piston in the master cylinder was shot so it had to pump the brakes to get them to “take”. I paid $50 and got the short end of the deal. But hey, it was my first car!

hey, I had a ’61 ramble station-wagon … I could even quickly deal with the bad starter issue without even a look with a tire tool ….. hehe, get it up to 60 mph and the vacumn powered wipers would start cleaning the windshield!

Showing a little bit of youth but my first car was a 1979 6.6L Pontiac Trans Am… it ran in excess of 150mph but I wouldn’t recommend it. The windows felt like they were going to blow in and I’m suprized the hood didn’t peel back with all the air running through the shaker seal. The state patrol wasn’t amused and I was reaaaaaly lucky I had a lenient judge.

At well over a ton, she didn’t have a hole shot but the 400 4 barrel would run like a violated little monkey after she got turning.

…and yes, I called it “Bandit”

p.s. Tony — lemme know if you want to run ’em!!!

77 honda civic, two different colored doors, 3 different colors on the quarter panels, and a windshield wiper that worked almost all of the time. It only died after I bought it from my roomie and I started changing the oil and filter regularly (he warned me against that — he just ever added oil).

But hey…when you put it in the ditch, you and a buddy could just about haul it out without breaking a sweat.

Oh yeah, we called it “the dent”.

Actually, this pic is just one I nabbed off the web. I wish mine was so swwweeeeettt as this…

1977 Chrysler Cordoba with the 400 4 barrel. Truly a gas guzzler with no prayer at a hole shot but on the top end, well……….. I had ‘er to 100 with more motor to go once and blew a front tire! We both survived the incident but it scared me enough to not “see what she’ll do” ever again.

1st car was a 63 Ford Galaxie, mostly rust, some green paint, 3 spd on column and a hot 260 V-8. That poor little thing had more torque than it knew what to do with.(3 gear rubber – no problem) but I think maybe 80-85mph tops. She only set me back $150. and that included 6 tires and wheels.

I’ll have to scan some pics over the next couple of days, for when I had my rides, there were no digital cameras……..

    Anyways,

At the age of 15, I had a 68 Mustang coupe, with a 302 I dumped in it.

Then @ the age of 17, I bought a 82 Camaro with a V-6 to pick up chicks.

Then @ 18, I sold it and bought another 82 Camaro with a 305 that I yanked and put in a built 350.

Then, while still in high-school, at 18 I bought a black 69 Camaro that had a bad, really really bad reputation in Hastings. The previous owner was probably the guy who gave Tuck his gray hairs today!!! The car had such a bad reputation from the previous owner, that 3 cop cars pulled me over the first night I had it in Hastings and told me to leave town. I didn’t do anything, but they didn’t want that car in town………

She had a really mean and wild 350. While drag racing on Vermillion street in Hastings on a Friday night @ 11:30pm, I blew the motor. I beat the Mach 1 that I was racing though. Really stupid thing to do. I was in speeds over 90mph downtown Hastings.

    So,
I pulled the 350 and went nuts. Over the course of 2 years, I built a 396 that pumped over 550hp. I was running a rock crusher 4 speed. I was able to pull the front tires off the ground and reached speeds closee to 180mph.

In the meantime at the age of 21 while in the Army, I bought a 72 Monte Carlo SS. Texas car, without a speck of rust. Fully loaded. I wasn’t pleased with the performance of the 350, so I built up a new 350 for it, to the same specs of a 375hp 1970 Vette engine. At 30 mph, I would jump on the throttle and smoke the tires.

    Then,
    I got divorced…………Yep, all are gone……..

Probably a good thing, for I have no intent or desire to go fast anymore. Burn outs are cool, but running 11.5 seconds in the quarter mile is just not my cup of tea anymore.

By the way, all of my toys I bought myself by pitching horse crap at the local farm and saving my money.

I got into all of this, thanks to my older brother who had a 1970 Mach 1, with a 351C, 4 speed, fully loaded. He also had a sweet 57 Chev.

Buddys at school had Belvederes, Chargers, Challengers, Cudas, 68 Camaro. All extremely fast cars……….

Today, one of my old buddies is still into cars. He became a collector who today has a Daytona (1970 Daytona) and a Superbird, along with 2 Cudas, that have serial numbers back-to-back, meaning they rolled off the assembly line one after the other. He also has a boat load of other rare, cool cars.

I’ve grown out of it today and just have no desire to go fast anymore. None of us died from crashing, but there were some ugly crashes and emergency room runs…….Guess we were lucky!!!!!

    Gary,
Reading your post brings back memories. I know I’m a bit older, but when I was much younger late 60’s early 70’s, I listened to WLS on the radio(yes AM was all we had, remember the Big 89?) anyway I can still hear the commercials for Mr Norm’s Grand Spalding Dodge. I was in a couple of those Super Bees, one had the 6 pack, the other was just a 4brl. both would do around 165-170, couldn’t pass a gas station, but they were hot. My cousin built his first 390 ford engine for his fairlane. That thing scared the sh– outta me, ran 130 plus most of time. I’m glad I’m still here, unfortunately an early 70’s Mach 1 was his demise.

Fun discuson on 1st cars. My first car (being raised in Ca) was an Austin Healy Sprite (bugeye),
and my 2nd car was a 1965 Mustang 289/ 225hp that I worked up to a 271 hp Hypo. Wish I had them both.
Friends I grew up with at the same time had: a 1966 new Carroll Shelby GT350, a mint 1962 Corvette 327, and a 1966 Pontiac GTO (389). We used to race and drag all the time (and survived). What fun times…

my first vehicle was a 77 chevy 3/4 ton suburban 4×4 with a 454. she wasn’t the fastest but boy could we haul decoys and beer (not that we drank beer at 16 ) she was a war wagon when it came to hunting though. The thing that the police liked about it is that it could fit 14 guys in it.

My first ride was a 80′ Dodge Omni, more like a go-cart complete with a Alpine.. Then I upgraded to a 71 Lemans SS with a 350 4 barrel.. Gas was 85 cents..

My first car was when i was 16 and it was a 2 door 57 chevy that was just painted aztec bronze and i bought it for $250 and it ran good with a stock 283 in it. I rebuilt it for $325 dollars to 325 horse with a brand new 650 carter afb that was $85 bucks and a 390 positraction rearend with a 3 speed on the floor. I used to dump the clutch leaving my girlfriends house and the smoke would roll in the back seat lol, my girlfriends parents hated that car and always warned her about me and said i was dangerous and no good and always told her why are you going with that maniac lol. It ran good and it got decent milage until some guys at school hot wired it and wrapped it around a telephone pole right behind the door. Ive always wanted to build a little chevy 2 with a 427 in it with a hydro with 450 horse but i want to live longer too. Boy there was nothing like a cruise down the avenue and a cold schlitz on a friday night with your girlfriend that sat right next to you, those days were way cooool
