Does anybody know how much weight should be on the tougue. The boat, motor and extra gear weights 2780lbs and has 360lbs on the tongue, is this too much. The tires don’t look well after about 5,000 miles.
    Thanks for the help,

You generally want 10-15% for tongue weight. I would check the weight rating on your tires. If the tires aren’t rated high enough they will wear prematurely.

Shoreland’r has an excellent website with much information on boat trailers.
    http://www.shorelander.com/pages/forum/f_trstep3.html

Here is an excerpt from the above page:
To determine proper tongue weight, total the package weight (boat with fuel/battery, motor with maximum horsepower, and trailer) and multiply it by 6% on single axles and 5% on tandem axle trailers. ShoreLand’r suggests that tongue weight may be acceptable in a 5-7% range.

I had to move my axel about 15” forward to get the recommended 6% tongue weight — it made a world of difference in ease of towing.

How would one find out how much their trailer wieghs in the twin cities? I’m going to start towing with my car soon, and I would really like to know the total trailer weight. I guess I can figure out witht the tougue weight it myself.

Cool I believe you work less than a minute away from me I’ll have to drop by sometime this week. Thanks for the idea
