    Dave,

This is a great deal to be able to get your restricted license in 3 days for only a $295 class fee.

I would recemmend this to anyone who thinks that they will be guiding in the future. Once you have your original license it is a fairly straight forward process to have it renewed every 5 years.

If you are thinking of doing this get an application packet from the USCG and look it over to make sure that you will qualify.

$295.00 is a whole lot cheaper than appearing in Federal court.

    Yup Yup !!

It will be nice to get this taken care of…I may only guide les than a dozen times a year but the amount doesn’t matter…Gary, the instructor, has recieved great reviews on his ability to put this class on.

How different is this class from the one that was held up near Alma?

The one we took up in Alma was not restricted to a particular body of water… or in the case of the class Koonce will take, a short stretch of the Mississippi River. Given all the federally regulated bodies of water throughout MN and my potential interest in guiding on any or all of them at some point, I opted for the ful OUPV certification.

I took Capn Gary’s Class last spring and highly recommend it. My restricted license covers Pools 9 & 10, the Lower Wisconsin River and all of the Rock river system including Koshkonong. Capn’ Gary will work exceptionally hard to see that you pass. Show up, pay attention and you won’t have any problems. This is a good course at a good price!

I can second that a class is a great way to get your license. I have done it both ways. I originally got an Alaska Remote Rivers license many, many years ago. I went the route of taking a class. 3 days of class, the testing and was pretty much done other than the paperwork which the school walked us through and submitted for us.

When I found myself in Texas and needed to upgrade to a near coastal license which would be good up to 100 mi offshore I decided to do it all myself and save the money the class would cost. I studied for months and practice tested on the computer almost 400 times. I ended up buying a license test book, Chapmans Piloting, and Bowditch which set me back well over $100. I drove 200 mi. to the REC in Houston spent money on a hotel and meals and spent 1-1/2 days taking 4 test modules. I passed 3 without any problem but took 3 tries to get the Rules of the Road module passed successfully with the required better than 90% score. I was really sweating the Rules module due to the fact that if I failed it the 3rd time I would have to start the testing process over from the beginning and make another trip back to Houston.

I am quite proud of the fact that I did it myself and I learned a great deal in the course of my studies, but if I had to do it over again I would take a class and save myself a lot of time and unnecessary aggravation.

here is the quote from Gary’s website

    Quote:

IThe requirements for this license are 360 days of experience on the river, attend the 24-hr course and succesfuly complete two exams. 30-question rules of the road with a passing grade of 90% and a 50-questions exam on navigation and deck general and deck safety with a passing grade of 70%. A certificate of completion is provided upon the successful completion of the exams. You need to make application to the Regional Exam Center within one year of the date of the certificate for the issuance of the license.

    Tuck,

There is no thunder to steal

If you can get a class up your way, and that gets the class closer to the people then that’s just makes the most sense
