Power Pro

I went to Gander in Davenport and wanted Power Pro put on Abu Garcia abumatic 476 spincast reel. The guy told me he wouldn’t put braid on a spincast reel, because it would get behind something and ruin the reel.

I use baitcasters most of the time, but I wanted to set a spincast up for when kids are with me.

Has anyone had experience with braid on a spincast reel????

I have used Power Pro on ALL my reels. Most of my reels are really good/high end reels and have had most of them for at least 5 years. Never a problem.

Jim, I’m not sure about Power Pro but I once put Fireline (20#) on an 808 reel and it casted terrible. I suspect that because it’s not a smooth line that it wouldn’t flow from the spool though the small cover hole easily. I would also be concerned what a rougher line would do to the spool cover. Zebco 33s had a problem with plain mono cutting into them a couple of years back. I’d hate to see what Power Pro or Fireline would have done to them. I would also be concerned with the durability of the pick up pins with the premium lines.

Power pro, will cast great on spinning gear, but as with any super line it may wear out componants faster, but I have had heavy mono wear out rods and reels also, the kids will love the power pro because they will get longer cast, and will feel the lighter bites.

PP works well on spinning reels. I have not used it on Spincast reels, but I would certainly give it a try. I doubt it would ruin the reel. At worst, you may get a nasty tangle in there that binds it up. Might take a while to get it cleared out.

I had very light weight PP on spinning reel for about 2 outings, was less than impressed. I know salmon and walleye trollers love the stuff however.

I use power pro on a spinning reel and it works well. I use it on all of my baitcasters. I just wanted to try it on this spincast, but the guy at gander wouldn’t put it on. I just paid $13.99 for it on sale so don’t care if I ruins it. What I do is buy a 150 yd spool and have them put 75 yds each on two reels.

I put PP on one of my spincast reels and for the most part I don’t mind it. Sometimes it can be a pain in the to cast because of line twist and so forth. But for trolling it works just great. I would just put some on and try it and see what you think.

Haven’t tried that brand. When superlines first came out,I tried a couple. It worked into the spool and wouldn’t cast after a short period of time.

I use Quantum reels which come with a spare spool. One spool has 6 or 8# XL line and the other has 10# PP. I can switch spools depending on the type of fishing that day. Also can switch reels to different speed rods when changing techniques. Haven’t had any problems with PP though.

I think everyone needs to realize Jim is asking about using PP on a “Spincast” reel, not a “Spinning” reel. Big difference in how these 2 reels work.

I have all these types of reels – remember, I am a fishing tackle addict . Only line I use is braided. Power Pro all the way because you just never know what your going to hook into.

Now, I must say thou that I take apart all my reels and give them a super good cleaning and lube them up. Maybe thats why I have never had a problem with braided line recking my reels.

Just caught that it was a spincast by the time I got to your post Jon.
Power Pro will eat up the pin that holds the line inside the reel.
