August/Sepetember In-Fisherman has a good article about Circle Hooks and Catfishing.

I read it. Matter of fact, I brought it along at the GTG so I could show it to Brink and pick his brain about it while we were catfishing. But we were to busy trying to pull them cats out of snags, snagging up reels (I admit it, it was all me), and getting lost in a maze of a dredging project. I finally got to dig the magazine back out yesterday and read it. Verryyy interesting

I use circles 3/0 on my stink baits and for worms. I haven’t tried fishing for the big Flats yet. I can’t seem to set the hook with a regular hook. I just put rods with circles in holder and wait til they bend over then pick up and real in.

There’s been a lot of contraversy over hooks…it’s the old Ford vs Chevy issue.

But you and I are on the same page. I’ll use circles for channels with cut bait everytime…but when it comes to flats..I’ve tried circles for flats and won’t go back. Too many missed fish in my un-scientific experiance.

    Hey guys,

I have never used circle hooks and I was wondering if they would be good for my 4 year old who isn’t real good at hook setting yet. Not cats, but for panfish?

    Thanks,
    EJ

Don’t see why not? I’ve used them for bullheads before…just get the smallest size you can.

I would give them a try. Like Brian says small ones and just a couple waxies or small peice of worm. Let us know how it works.

Remember, when you use circle hooks a slow rod is a must. The fish most be able to run a bit so the hook can turn and hook in the corner of its mouth. Great for channels. I like use salmon downrigger rods MH that are about 8ft.

Lands…I heard that most Red River fisherman didn’t use circles? Any truth to that?
