GOVERNOR PAWLENTY’S STATEMENT REGARDING A REQUEST FROM PETA TO DECLARE WALLEYE OFF-LIMITS TO FISHING — August 2, 2005

Saint Paul – The following is a statement from Governor Tim Pawlenty regarding a request from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to declare walleye off limits to fishing in Minnesota:

“PETA continues to display goofy judgment. Fishing is part of our way of life in Minnesota – moms, dads, kids, and grandparents enjoy beautiful summer and winter days fishing. We care for and enjoy our natural resources the right way. The PETA ‘Fish Empathy Project’ is nutty and misses the mark. Fishing is not, as they claim, the same thing as hooking a dog through the mouth and dragging them behind your car.

“PETA should stay out of Minnesota’s proud fishing lifestyle. Because of their letter, I’m going out for a walleye dinner tonight.”

As someone involved in Minnesota politics, I have never agreed with Governor Pawlenty before, but if the post is accurate, he does appear to be right about this one. PETA should work on education & promotion of catch & release, rather than banning fishing outright.

I have a hard time believing that this is for real. It just doesn’t sound like an “official” statement. I like what it says, just have a hard time swallowing this.

Pioneer Press online has a link to it however I’m not a member so I could not view it. I was able to view it on the National Rifle Assoc home page. I’m pretty sure it’s real and thank you Gov for acting like a real Minnesota man.

    Pawlenty throws back PETA request

    BRIEFING: MINNESOTA

    Minnesota anglers, fear not.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty formally has rejected a request from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that he declare walleye pike, Minnesota’s state fish, off limits to fishing.

“PETA should stay out of Minnesota’s proud fishing lifestyle,” Pawlenty said Tuesday in a two-paragraph news release issued by his staff. “Because of their letter, I’m going out for a walleye dinner tonight.”

He was responding to a July 29 letter from Karin Robertson, manager of the “Fish Empathy Project” for the Norfolk, Va.-based PETA. In the letter, she argued that fish feel pain, just as people do, and she urged him to outlaw angling.

In an interview, Robertson said she legally changed her name to GoVeg.com, the address for one of PETA’s Web sites, two years ago.

She urged Minnesotans to visit fishinghurts.com, another PETA site, for links to research papers describing fish sensitivity to pain.

I wish all politicians were more outspoken like that on a regular basis, let these people know exactly what THE MAJORITY think!!!!!!
