I need some help with my pc from all the gurus out there. I bought a new pc thats a dell and i loaded the xp professional program. The first computer i bought was in 2000 and was a gateway with a printer and a scanner, both hewlett-packards. I bought this new pc without the scanner or printer because i have mine that work well. I have the windows 98 cds with the drivers and programs on them for my old system. I tried loading the drivers off both my old cd’s and it wouldn’t load them. I went to the hewlett-packard website to download new drivers and it sent them to me. The drivers were for the xp program from hewlett-packard. When i tried to open and install them a microsoft message came up and said that microsoft strongly recomended against using these drivers for my new xp program. Again the drivers were from hewlett-packard for the xp program. Is there competetion involved here because microsoft wants to sell the drivers on software programs, what can i do about this, thanks in advance

Just got off the phone with the hewlett-packard company sales rep and he said my old photosmart p1000 isnt compatable with the new xp program because xp wasen’t made yet and its and outdated printer even though it was a good printer at the time. The good news is a new one will cost me $150 direct from hewlett-packard delivered to my door the next day. My scanner is still ok to use because they have the drivers available online, so thats 1 out of 2, not bad.

No competition for drivers since most are free. HP just hasn’t ‘verified’ it’s drivers with Bill Gates yet. As long as you download the latest XP drivers from HP you’ll be fine! You gotta Dell dude!John LuebkerPosts: 694July 22, 2005 at 12:51 am #374287Quote:

Something to think about before you order it. You can get a nice 3-1 (scanner, copier, and printer) for under $100. This is the model up from the one I have and you wouldn’t be able to tell which picture was the copy sams club Just my 2 cents before getting a new one?
July 22, 2005 at 12:54 am #374289The mother in law just bought an HP printer, the thing has everything all in one, fax/printer and scanner, prints unbelievable pictures from a digi cam! Might be an option to explore being as it sounds like you are already going to be in the market for the printer.
July 22, 2005 at 1:49 am #374295Hey thanks Mcwalley, i thought it might be something like that but wasen’t sure. Seems like its nuts to have to throw a good printer away just because a guy can’t find the so called right drivers. I’ll download it and try it, whats it going to hurt, my printer? if it does i can get another one, and i am likeing this new dell. Don’t know why this runs better but it does and the new xp program is alot easier to use than the older 98, thanks again for everyones help
July 22, 2005 at 2:40 am #374301I just bought [several months ago] a new pc with XP and also bought a new printer model HP Deskjet 3740 which comes with software that works with XP and paid only around 30.00 for the printer at Walmart. It works great and much cheaper.
Thanks, BillJuly 22, 2005 at 3:25 am #374308hey Bill if mine goes out the window i’ll look into one of those, thanks for the info.
July 22, 2005 at 5:17 am #374313Yes cancel that printer the 79.00 lexmark is a photo quality printer that lets you print directly to the CD/DVD if you want.
HP has always had the worst Drivers and driver support you could imagine nothing but headaches and horror stories for the last twenty years.
July 22, 2005 at 2:38 pm #374335thanks pierbridge if i don’t get it up and runing and if it ends up not working the way it used to i’ll look into getting a new lexmark, didn’t know that about the drivers etc.
July 22, 2005 at 7:14 pm #374377Xp should still recognize your printer but it may not operate like it use to try a couple different drivers.
It’s not just HP a lot of manufactors are not supporting older hardware.
July 22, 2005 at 8:31 pm #374387thats probably right, antiquated to them. I loaned my printer cord to my nextdoor neighbor so i’ve got to get that back so the drivers i downloaded last night will recognise the printer,,,,Right?? But i do know i do need the cord or so the directions say solved that one fast enough lol
