I just read all the posts on another fishing forum site regarding binding probs with shimano reels.Apparently this binding prob happens when the reel gets wet, ie. rain or takes a dunking. Guys are saying that shimano has been aware of probs for a few years. The stradic was mentioned most as having probs. This year, I’ve upgraded my equipment and bought ’05 stradic and ’05 symetres, and an older model sahara , probably a ’03.Was wondering if I’m going to suffer buyers remorse soon ? Have you guys had issues with Shimano, either the newer versions or the older ones ?

I’ve been running the shimano reels for a long time. I’ve never had this problem. I run symmetre and sustain. No stradics yet.

I have a Sahara that has many, many, many cranks to the reel, lots of screaming drag runs, and had it since the very late 90s………..It still works like the day I bought it. I use it consistently for walleye rigging.

    All my Shimanos work good!!!

I also have a VERY old Shimano, with a quick fire trigger. Picked it up at a garage sale, from my old neighbor. I couldn’t tell you the model. I put it on a cork rod……..That reel still has one of the smoothest drags of all my reels………

It maybe true, but I haven’t seen it at all……..

I have 4 Sedonas and two Symetres. Quality reels. I also love the Quantum Energy reels.

I use mostly shimano. All are very smooth. I had one symetre that started bindig tooking apart and gave it the standard maitnace of cleaning and replacing grease and oil and it works like brand new. The reel was like 5 years old and I had never done anything to it before this cleaning so I wouldnt call that a problem on shimano’s part. Great reals IMO.

I run almost exclusively Shimano. I have at least 5 different model in my line up. Majority are Symetre. My first Shimano is 17 years old and it’s still in the first string. I have never broke one.

I use Shimano reels as well (stradic, symetre, sedona, calcutta) and have never encountered any binding problems when they get wet.

I’ve got about a dozen Shimanos (all new in the last 12 months) that work flawlessly so far through some pretty wet conditions.

I have a Stradic that I use to use a lot. Last year while fishing Erie in the fall and having wet weather for 2 days it got to where it wouldnt even turn. Once it was dried and relubed it worked fine, but I lost confidence in it and shelved it!
