Not personally, but I do have a co-wprker who has had this for a couple years, and he’s much happier now. It’s not super fast as far as I know, and the intial and monthly cost are a big high for what you get compared to those who can have cable or DSL, but it is suppose to work good, back in the day I believe you needed a phone line to upload, I *think* this has changed. Long short short, I’ve heard no complaints.

Ohhhh, ohhhhh…boy this is a good place to put my 2 cents in! My brother had Direct TV…can I say that? Anyway, they installed it and got it working at 100k, saying that because it was raining that it was slower. Ten minutes, no lie, ten minutes after the installer left it quit working, would not connect. To make a long story short….over 40 hours of phone calls later, it still was not working. I personally spent 7 hours straight on the phone with a service tech who insisted it was the cable from modem to computer that was bad, a new one was purchased while I was on phone and it did not work either, then it was computer that was bad, so laptop was hooked up…then it was the modem that was bad, a service tech was needed. This went on for 5 months, they said it could not be cancelled because of signed agreement and if cancelled a termination fee would apply. Oh, by the way, when asking to speak with a supervisor or manager I was told they dont have any. It cost $270 to terminate contract plus the 5 months of $70.00 fees for no internet service and the absolute worst customer service department I have ever dealt with. So my suggestion would be to run, run, run away from sattelite if that is the provider! Good luck!

This was three years ago…but I had a friend that went to satilite internet….download only….didn’t work..switch to the satilite both ways for $800. more…after way too much hassle she did get her money back and is happy with dial up…that’s all she can get…

I was hoping things would have changed by now…

I keep calling up Qwest every couple of months to see if DSL is available in my area yet. Nope. I then ask where their “spirit of service is?” They laugh. Its not like I’m asking for a time machine or invisibility spray. I’m 5 minutes from downtown St. Paul! Are pony express riders installing the stuff?

In a nutshell….Keep calling Qwest,Verizon, and stay clear of Satellite Internet, it’s for people that have no other options.

Satelite internet – it’s total crap. Starband, direcway, etc. all junk. The ping time is average of 1600ms, so for just average viewing of the internet, pages load dreadfully slow.

The upfront costs are a joke – $800, you buy the dish and must pay for installation.

Stay away from this unless you really need “faster” speeds or at least get a demo before you do anything.

P.S. I have satelite internet and cancelled it after contract was up.

I have an e-mail in with my mom, but they live in the country as well and went with a company that places a small box on the roof maybe 8×8. And I can guarantee it wasn’t a $800 start up fee or they wouldn’t have it. It might be like 50 – 60 bucks a month though. I will let you know when they get back to me.

The domain name for her e-mail is “1-cs.com” so maybe you can do some internet searching on this until I find out more. Basically what I am saying don’t give up yet because there are some good ones out there
