I haven’t fished on Cross and Whitefish for over 10 years. But, we had a cabin on the south bay of Cross for many years, and being a walleye fan, I spent a lot of time on these lakes looking for walleye. Those were the days of Lindy rigs with crawlers or leeches and back trolling.
Good places to try then were, on Cross; try the break alongside the state campground by the dam entrance [east side], just out from the boat launch is some interesting structure; try the break to the east of the two small islands on the south end of the main lake; try the southeast corner of the main lake, it has a very fast drop. There are two sunken islands, the largest is to the northeast of the two small islands, and the smaller elongated sunken island, [called the rockpile] is further up the lake from the larger island. The breaks were at 18-20 feet.
On Whitefish; try out from the entrance into Trout Lake, again follow the breaks. There is a sunken channel here, it is the old river bed. Try both sides.
Try the west side of the long bar that divides upper and lower Whitefish. There are other places that produced fish, but I just can’t reference you to these spots. Ya gotta be there.
There is much structure on these lakes, and anytime you find something on your sonar while running the center of these lakes it would be worth a few minutes to give it a try.
Good luck, and let us know how you do. Rider and I are interested. [Nick, we never did get out together on pool 2. Should try to do that sometime when the levels drop. Where is your place on Cross?]
