I am a recreational coordinator at a nursing home in South Minneapolis and I need some fishing expert advice. Next month is National Senior fishing month and we are trying to plan an outing to pool 2 just below the ford dam for a group of 7-10 seniors. But, I am in need of some rod and reel combos, basic is fine, just something that can be used to catch fish. I have my own rods but I only have three and that won’t get 10 people a good chance to catch fish. Also, is anyone is willing to help out for this outing or have a suggestion for a better location for productive fishing close to south Minneapolis please contact me. I want to make this expirence a great one since this is the first time that I have been able to get aproval to do a trip like this. If it goes well it could turn out to be an annual outing maybe even a couple a times a year. Please help!

I have some rods that could be used, but no reels for them. If you can find a reel, they are yours to use. Let me know if I can help. Have you talked with Gander or Cabelas??

Thanks Kooty for the offer if I find reels I will write you asap. I will look into gander and cabellas. Most likely gander since they are local in the cities and I don’t have much time to get down to owatonna for cabellas.

For anyone else that is reading this post, the day that we are planning to fish would be the 8th of june which is a wednesday.

Well since I started late planning everything I am out of luck through cabella’s and gander. They request a writen donation request 6-8 weeks in advance and I only have two. Guess I will figure out something. I am going to check out some of the “neighborhood” sports stores too.

Should have said something sooner, Matt. I have three reels and two rods. I will bring them up this week-end with some terminal tackle.

Are you looking for donations or are you looking for equipment to use for the day? If you are looking for equipment for the day then I might have an idea. I think there were some combos left from last years BB/BS ARM event. If they are still around maybe you could borrow them for the day. I will be around Pool 4 this weekend so I could even bring them up if there are any available. On a side note I would love to help out that day if I can get the time off work. Do you have the hours you are planning on going?

The rods and reels could be either donations or rentals for the day. The hours that we are looking to go out would be about

    10:00 departure from the home

11:15 start fishing after unloading the van

    12:30 picnic lunch

    1:00 fishing till about 2:30 or 3:00

depending on the crowd, restroom needs, weather, and if the bite is on.

If anyone lives in the minneapolis area and has a great shore fishing spot, it doesn’t have to be your hunny hole, but a general area that would produce fish for some well desirving elders please let me know. You can even PM me with the info so that it is semi-confidential. I don’t want to get out there and get skunked. I would be very embarasing for me after I tried to get this trip going for 4 years and then we didn’t catch anything.

Also, if there are and tried and true techniques or baits that anyone thinks would be best for shore fishing please let me know. I was just thinking to use the old fashioned live worm and bobber but if anyone has a better suggestion they are very welcome.

Thanks agian for all the advice and help so far every one. If you need to contact me the

nursing home # is (612)724-5495 ext. 138 or you can send me a PM here.

This is the spot that I am looking at going to since it is close to the nursing home and it has a pretty good sized area for picnic and water access

Location: St. Paul, at Hidden Falls Regional Park, just south of Ford Parkway.

Species available: Bluegill, Crappie, Catfish, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, White Bass, Walleye, Carp, and many others.
    Restrooms: Yes.
    Parking: Good.
    Picnic: Yes.
Comments: This is an excellent summer fishing spot. Fish with corn or worms to catch carp and freshwater drum. Several good fishing locations are upstream from the parking lot. Cast to where the river’s current is slowed by rocks, logs, or underwater humps. Use enough weight to hold the bait down on the river bottom in the strong current.

This is a suggested spot by the DNR for good shore fishing.
    I hope they are right.
