My friend told me to put my outboard in gear while trailering on long trips. This is to keep the prop from spinning while going down the road.He said the prop bearing will wear out from the excessive spinning.Does anybody else do this? TOM

I have heard the same thing Tom. Here is somthing to think about. All the props that I have seen do not turn to fast going down the road. I would think that it would have to be millions of miles to make it a real worry. But hey why allow any more ware then you need.

I loop my bungee strap for the transom saver around the prop, keeps it from spinning and holdds the saver in place, guess a shorter strap would work too, but hey it works.

I always put mine in gear. The propshaft seal is a water cooled and lubricated. (Its supposed to keep the water out and the oil in) when it spins free in the air its not being cooled or lube’d. They aren’t cheap to replace. When was the last time you watched yours while cruising down the interstate? I have seen some of them spinning pretty fast. Not as fast as they would under power of the motor, but then again. Its in the water under power. I’ll keep mine in gear and spend the money for a new seal on beer.
