Can any one direct me to books on how to make your own bucktail lures and any catalogs/companies who sell the components?
    Thanks for any help.

    hi Cheri,
I’d recomment Stamina Tackle in north mpls.
they were very helpful when I started my jig molding. Will try and think of their web site. heck may have to go down stairs and get it for you.
    okay, I’m back.
    the web site is

they have tackle components for just about everything. in the front of the catalog, are a few pages offering instructional manuals. call for a catalog, and also ask about how-to bucktail books, they can steer you in the right path.
I can see it now, the next personal BEST, WITH a home-made Bucktail. You are alreay RockIn.

I tie all of our bucktail jigs. If you want some help I’d be glad to show you. You could probably get started by going to Cabellas to get your vice and other things. If you want to go there someday let me know, and I can help you pick out some things you will need. I really enjoy tying my own. Gives me something to do on those long winter days.

Take Sal up on the offer. She is better than some pros at it. She has tied a lot of them for me I know.

    MG,

If you’re looking to tie musky bucktails, the best place for components is Moore’s Lures in Woodruff, WI. You can even call Dick Moore up and he’ll help you with any questions you have. http://www.mooreslures.com

Stamina (Jack mentioned previously) is also very good!

I’d recommend starting on bucktails jigs for practice before graduating to big musky bucktails if that is your goal. Also, I prefer tying on coils (or directly onto the wire shaft) over tying on trebles. That’s something for you to check out when you start shopping.

Finally, there really aren’t any good books on this. Sometimes Gander Mountain or Muskies, Inc. hold seminars on how to make baits, and they’re your best bet for good info.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I have a lot of experience tying bucktails and making baits, generally.

If you want to make Musky lures I don’t know anything about that. Just assumed you wanted to do jigs. We have ordered from Jans Net Craft and there prices seem pretty reasonable.

    Cheri;
I’ve been kicking this around for awhile……..making my own.

I have all the tools and vices, however the key to making a good bucktail is “balance”.

Most bucktails (quality) you can purchase for $15, give or take.

When you throw in the hair, hooks, blades, beads…….to make 10 or 15 lures, you are going to be about $50 to $100 into it to get started.

If you want to do it for fun, GO FOR IT!!!
However, if you want to do it to save money……I would do more research.

Maybe if you get a chance, go to Pastika’s or Thorne Bros and look at all their bucktails. See how they are put together for “balance”. So you know how long of a wire, how many beads, how big of a blade, for how heavy of a lure.

Hope I’m not discouraging you…….just want to pass on quality info for making a “good bucktail”.

I agree with Gary on the cost issues. Also, there is a good musky shop on Pewaukee Lake called Smokey’s. I think they have a website and maybe you’ve even been there. I only mention it because I think you are a good distance from the cities and I remember reading that you have caught a few muskies on Pewaukee! However, Thorne’s has a great selection of bucktails AND bucktail components. That way you could pick on off the shelf and get the components to copy it! That’s how I learned.

I wrote an article on bucktails for the Muskies, Inc. magazine about 5-6 years ago and it’s still online. Here’s a link to it: bucktail article The editor changed a few things on it and it was a hack-job anyway (my first attempt), but it does contain some good information that might provide a little guidance. By the way, I dissolved the company referenced in the article about 4 years ago and don’t sell bucktails anymore.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice. Sal, I might take you up on you offer and try the jigs first – won’t be for a couple months thou.
Basically, it will be more of a hobby then anything (like I need another hobby ). I can’t seem to find the right color bucktail/blade combo that I am looking for in the stores/on-line so I thought why noy just make my own.

I got into Bucktail jig tying last year. After a bit of trial and error it’s EASY to tie up some killer jigs. Most of my eyes this spring came on bucktails I tied up. If I can do it ANYONE can.
I order most of my stuff from Jans Netcraft. Some from Stamina and other stuff from Barlows.
Hands down the best deals going are from a place called Hagens. Unfortunately, they only sell wholesale and basicaly supply outfits like Jans , Barlows etc. Unless you have a retailers license or know sombody who does that can order stuff from them for you, your out of luck. I lost my contact a few years back so am no longer able to get stuff rom there anymore. Bummer !

Anyways , If you want a great site for tackle making in general check out TackleUnderground.com
There are a TON of knowledgable folks on that site on just about any facet of tackle making. Plastics ,Jigs , Flys , Cranks , you name it. They also have some pretty cool tutorials showing you how to make stuff. I believe they have one for tying bucktail trebble hooks.

Go for it MG ! The initial cost ( vice , hair , thread , a bobbin or two , a GOOD sharp little scissors ) is’nt too bad. Problem is it’s addicting and THAT’S where the $ adds up. You’ll be wanting to tie up all sorts of color combos after a while. LOL
After you master bucktail then there’s all sorts of cool synthetic stuff to tie up. Some of the new Hologram Mylar stuff is just KILLER tied on a jighead !
